TORNADO SEASON BEGINS SOON: A reminder Alabama's tornado season begins November 1, and runs through the end of May.

The year has been remarkably calm for the central counties of the state; NWS Birmingham has issued only five tornado warnings since January 1.

The Tennessee Valley had a number of tornadoes May 8-9, and South Alabama experienced several tornadoes in January.

This is simply a reminder that now is a good time to get ready for the season.

*Be sure you have a NOAA Weather Radio in your home and business. That is the baseline for receiving severe weather watches and warnings.

*Emergency alerts need to be active on your phone. WEA (Wireless Emergency Alerts) tones are loud, and get your attention... they are used for tornado warnings and high impact flash flood warnings.

*Never, ever rely on an outdoor siren. Never.

*In the safe place in your home, have helmets for everyone in the family. Including adults.

*If you live in a mobile home, think about where you are going if a tornado warning is issued. Have transportation arranged and know how to get to a shelter or other safe place as quickly as possible.

As Hurricane Helene moves inland over Georgia and into the Carolinas, hurricane-force winds are expected to cause widespread power outages.

Additionally, 8 to 12 inches of rain could fall over the mountains of North Carolina, South Carolina, and northern Georgia, leading to significant flooding.

09/24/2024

Helene will be "a large storm with life-threatening impacts" hundreds of miles away from where it makes landfall.

Here are some things to consider when deciding which Storm Shelter to purchase:

1) Texas Tech Wind Institute lacked ISO 17025 accreditation which deems them not ICC-500 Compliant.
2) Storm Shelters and Safe Rooms must be listed with either ICC-ES, Intertek or Underwrighters Laboratory in order to be ICC-500 compliant.
3) Most grants and assistance in the purchase of a Storm Shelter/Safe Room requires it to be FEMA 320/361 and ICC-500 Compliant(refer to #1 above)
4) All compliant manufacturers listing can be found at the above listed website

This is why SCC Solutions utilized the services of ICC-ES and ICC-NTA for review and listing to ensure that the product you are relying upon to keep you safe, whether it be family or employees has been built according to what was tested.
It also shows that our over engineered design that meets and exceeds ICC-500 is not just our opinion, but rather been tested and is ICC-500 Compliant.
