Where has HECO been lately? There’s a reason you’re asking yourself that, and that’s because we’ve been staying busy with a constant flow of projects both locally and nationally. In our continuous expansion of servicing to all four corners of the country with the National Park Service, we recently had the opportunity to perform a site visit along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore in Buxton, North Carolina.

As if the task of evaluating the lighthouse boardwalk wasn’t interesting enough in itself for the project team, the setting was so picturesque that they found themselves occupied with simply admiring it… and sharing that admiration with the rest of us upon making it back.

HECO has already completed over 250 task orders for the NPS, and that number is consistently growing. To stay current with where we are and what we’re doing, check out our interactive map here: http://hecoengineers.com/national-parks

Whether it’s a scenic coastal lighthouse or well-known wharf, or even some historic presidential house, there’s always something new and exciting being added to our agenda - both in and out of the office. Tag along for the adventures and let us bring you with!

What do you get when five geniuses walk into a room? Well, a portion of the HECO office of course. Whether they’ve been around for two years, five, or 37(!!!), this month’s lineup of work anniversaries are comparable in excellence yet incomparable in their excellence when compared to anyone else from anywhere else.

Starting with the legend herself who has helped pave the path for making this as respectable of a company as we have today, Wendy Roberts has all our praise and recognition as the best accountant there is. Like, ever to exist. We extend a huge congratulations to her this week as she celebrates making it 37 years here at HECO – in fact she’s so grandfathered in that was one of the Holladay originals. We can hardly express just how much we appreciate all she does around here to keep things moving, and moving well.

Bret Turner is a few years behind her celebrating his 8th year with us, so he’s well on his way to becoming a HECO celebrity himself (as if he isn’t already). He’s the one to estimate costs around here and, in our line of work, there’s certainly a lot of those so we only have capacity for the best of the best. Here’s to just a couple years short of a decade, and many more than that to come!

Speaking of famous, then we’ve got our one and only Hayder Al-Salih who is kind of a boss of engineers if there’s even such a thing to exist. Equipped with his PhD and super smarts, he brings a lot to the table… including desserts into the office from time to time, for that reason alone we’ve decided to keep him around for a while – and about a million more.

Last BUT CERTAINLY not least, we’ve got Vince Carter who brings significant value to any project he’s on with his 33 years of experience in the utility, commercial, and industrial industry. Licensed as a professional engineer in eight different states, his credibility speaks for itself but his character is equally respectable. While we may not see him as much as we would like, he’s still a part of the HECO family and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Together, this handful of MVPs play a distinct role in helping make HECO the fantastic culture it is. With their bright personalities and applaudable work ethics, each one exemplifies HECO’s core staples – integrity, professionalism, and reliability – both in the office and out. Congratulations to you all on your work anniversary with us this month, and let this serve as a reminder of just how much the rest of us appreciate you!

Work anniversaries have been so frequent around here that they’ve been taking precedence on our social media feeds (to be fair, we practically treat them like holidays as they deserve to be) and yet there’s something else equally as important that we’ve been letting slide under the radar without proper recognition… until now that is. While we’ve been busy honoring the hard work and dedication of our existing employees, we haven’t been advertising all the new commitments to HECO recently made by our new ones. So without further ado, can we please turn our attention to the handful of bright, beautiful, and shining faces we’ve recently brought on board and invited onto our team?

With there being almost too many to name – which I’ll argue is an awfully good problem to have – we officially extend our warmest welcome to the group of staff engineers and cost estimators, many of which are still going strong in school before graduating with their official pieces of paper confirming their smarts (not that they need to prove it). We’re excited for what the future has in store for each one of you here but, for now, we invite the rest of the world to join us in congratulating you on the first step you’ve all successfully accomplished: getting the job! Now sit back, relax – while also working hard – and enjoy the ride now that you’re on it.

Oh, and there is such thing as too much coffee when you’re struggling to power through the days but at least it should do the trick in keeping you awake. Which is usually worth the risk. Speaking from personal experience, of course.

First year anniversaries are always a pretty big deal, around here and everywhere, so we’re treating it as just that for Elliot Stauffer as he celebrates his with HECO today. After putting in his time in the U.S. Army as a parachute rigger in the 75th Ranger Regiment, in the Masonry as an apprentice, and for the Vachino Masonry as a general laborer, he was already well on his way to building a well-rounded resume and a versatile skillset for both the workplace setting and life altogether. Then he picked up and moved to Boise, Idaho and has been studying at BSU while offering his plethora of knowledge here in our Nampa office ever since. None of us quite know how he does it all working full time as a full time student but he makes it happen, and does it well. Like really well.

Not only does he bring a respectable level of intelligence to our engineering operations, but equally so a willingness to learn as an eager attitude always holds the most valuable weight even when compared to smarts. We stand firm on the foundation that we only hire the highest quality here at HECO, and Elliot is a prime example of this. His hunger to succeed is contagious and it doesn’t hurt that he always seems to have a warm smile on his face, considering that’s just as contagious. Congratulations on surviving your first year here Elliot! We appreciate you, we commend you for all that you do, and we ask you to stay around forever to keep things more enjoyable than if you weren’t here. Now keep getting through school so we have yet another reason to celebrate you even more here soon enough!

They say time flies when you’re having fun, so that’s where the last five years of working with him must have gone. Because as much as we’ve enjoyed everything Brett Anderson has brought to the table – his easygoing personality and sharp sense of humor being at the top of that list – it seems like just yesterday that he was initially joining the family. In that time, he’s added a significant amount of value to our operations specifically with expanding our electrical department thanks to his esteemed expertise.

From the Air Force to Hewlett Packard to HECO, you’ve been busy gaining a variety of experience but now that you’re here we’re counting our blessings that you chose us to spend this time of your career with. The intelligence and credentials go without saying, but it’s your character that we admire even more especially since that’s what we’re dealing with every day so it makes a big difference when it’s authentic, honest, and dependable. Both your integrity and commitment to quality work doesn’t go unnoticed, which is only a few reasons of many we admire you so much as a colleague. Here’s to the first five years down and at the very least another five to go (and then some, if we have any choice in the matter). Congrats Brett!

If it weren’t for Scott Hodge, it would be just another Friday of just another week today. Which is still one reason to celebrate, for obvious reasons, but because of him, we have an even bigger reason to celebrate and honor the significance today brings because today we recognize his 14-year work anniversary with HECO! 14 years is a long time for some, and a lifetime for others, so to think we’ve been blessed with his contribution and quick-witted humor for that amount of time is an excuse to rejoice in itself.

Scott serves an essential role on our team as he has an unusually effective gift of driving communication and seeing that projects reach thorough completion. With a background in sales, marketing, and the project development phase of construction, he naturally cultivated his knack for building and fostering relationships with clients and it certainly shows. Not only is he appreciated for the value he brings to our operations, but equally for the enjoyable presence he presents around the office. His willingness is admirable as is his easygoing, lighthearted, and respectable demeanor on our team. So here's to it finally being Friday AND commending one of our best for his 14 years (and counting) of commitment here!

Doug Argo is a pretty important name around here, and that’s because Doug Argo is a pretty important person – both around here and everywhere. Which is why any reason to celebrate him is a valid one, so we’re using his 17-year work anniversary today to do just that. “What can be said about Doug that hasn’t already been said?” you may ask, and the answer is not much as it’s already been said. A staple to HECO, he plays a significant role in the workplace and an equally irreplaceable one amidst the family component of our team which makes him as respected from all of us for his sheer intellect and commitment to quality work as his fun-spirited nature and quick humor.

I don’t think any of us know what we would do without him, and to be honest I’d rather not have to think of it, so instead let’s focus on acknowledging the honorable amount of time he’s spent with HECO and how much good he has brought to our team on both a professional and personal level. As the Vice President of our Oregon Business Group and the City Engineer for Payette, it didn’t take him long after he first came on board with us to become a key part of our operations and a leading authority on municipal as well as federal projects.

Let’s give it up for him not only for contributing an immeasurable sum of value to our company over the years, but also for surviving 17 years with us! Because that's an accomplishment in itself. As the kids these days would say, he’s the real OG.

I bet you didn’t even know that today was a special day until now but let me let you all in on a little secret: it is. I’d even go as far as to argue it’s an extra special one considering who we’ve got on our hands to recognize, as none other than Jordan Carlson has finally reached his one-year mark here at HECO. For somebody who joined the team last June as a Marketing and Business Development Assistant and has since shifted, hopping over into project management, he’s made the transition look nearly effortless. He was great in his previous role but shines even brighter in his new one, quickly earning credibility and well-earned respect from all of us who have the pleasure of getting to work with him – or rather a higher level of respect, as we already hold a definite fondness of Jordan. And personally, having taken over his last role when I accepted my invite into the HECO family in the midst of his transition which translated to frequent interaction between us, I’m allowed (by own permission) to say that I’m the fondest of him of anyone. Besides his wife of course. Probably.

When he still ran the marketing realm here, he was ultimately responsible for creating and developing content for HECO’s brand and strategy – while sneaking out to fly the drone to gather aerial footage from time to time – which did wonders in paving the path for when someone else (namely, me) came along. Jordan now spends his days developing budgets and schedules through efficient collaboration with our team’s project engineers with the goal of keeping projects on track every step of the way. Not only is he excellent in his managing skillset of overseeing multiple factors, but he has a unique gift of commendable communication that’s worth celebrating in itself.

Not only are generosity and a willingly helpful demeanor two of his strong suits, but his personality beyond the professional stuff is pretty great too. There aren’t many others I’ve ever met that are as optimistic as Jordan is, about anything and everything, and his sense of humor always seems to be on point… which may be mutually beneficial to him and us, yet we’re the ones really getting the better end of the deal with the bigger laugh from it than he gives himself. Or so I’d like to think anyway. The occasional joke, however, will sneak up and catch me off guard whenever I don’t see it coming and those are the ones that have me practically on the floor in tears of laughter.

Here are the facts: Jordan is reliable, resourceful, and committed to giving his best on all tasks, with all colleagues, at all times. It’s his admirable dedication to producing the highest quality work and accepting any challenge that comes his way that we honor, but his sharp intellect, compassionate spirit, and genuinely genuine soul that we’re most thankful for, even more than the respectable results he’s known to deliver. Because let’s be honest, that’s better job security than anything else since we want to actually enjoy and appreciate the people we work alongside. We ask you to join us today as we recognize this guy’s first year anniversary – and ideally, first of many. Happy one year Jordan! Thanks for being you, in all authenticity and consistency and good attitudes.

That’s not all, folks. To complement our last post highlighting a recognition special enough on its own, we’ve got yet another one to acknowledge today so it looks like we’ll be putting in overtime with the celebrations this week. How terrible for us. I’m not quite sure how we’re going to manage it but, however we do, we appreciate them both for giving us a valid reason to do so. 29 only comes around once in a lifetime, as does somebody as remarkable as John Blom, so I’d argue that “a big deal” is even an understatement. Here’s to 29 years! (Not to be confused with his birthday, or so he claims along with his fellow work anniversary-er, but we’re not completely convinced of that being the truth). While it may still be a year short of the even bigger 3-0, which we all know will sneak up as quickly as this one did, let’s focus on celebrating each milestone you’ve made it so far in your HECO journey including this one. 29 years is still oftentimes 10, 20, and even 28 more than what many can say for themselves so well done and keep it going.

After graduating with his degree in 1993, John jumped into his career with what at the time was Holladay Engineering which is where his story with this company originated. Since then, he has stepped into the role as president in 2016 where he’s successfully led our team through several episodes of growth and evolution. He continues wearing several different hats every day, fulfilling various functions in project management, design, plan and specification preparation, and construction administration for infrastructure improvement projects. In addition to his continually growing resume of engineering design projects, John holds extensive experience as the program manager on federal IDIQ contracts and, because of that, has served essential to maintaining the strong relationship we have been fortunate enough to build with the National Park Service over the years. He’s currently registered as a PE in six different states, including his own in Idaho where he calls home.

Not only is he a true pleasure to work with for all the reasons from his quick humor and his honorable wisdom – which is entirely distinct from his knowledge – to his profound conversational skills and uniquely comfortable presence, but John is a legend at HECO and an unparalleled role model for all of us here. Until we have his consent to start celebrating his 30-year mark, we acknowledge the 29 years just shy of them but equally as impressive. Happy 29 years John! And no, we’re not letting you retire too yet (or ever) because let’s face it: you’re the key to keeping this place at least somewhat sane.

None of us are quite sure how the math works out considering seven years is practically a third of his life, or so we’re convinced anyway, but that’s what we’re honoring today with Jesse Christensen as that’s how long he’s been part of the HECO family. Not only is he a big deal around here with his quick wit and ingenious smarts, but he continues keeping us on our toes with knee-slapping jokes and giving us reasons to admire him due to his respectable character, kindhearted ways, and commitment to constantly adding value to our company’s operations with every year – and day – he chooses to stick around with us.

Here's the thing: there’s great, and then there’s Jesse, a couple hundred tiers above that. What I’m saying is that without him, HECO wouldn’t even be close to being the wonderful place it is. As if his resume confirming his dedication to hard work and an honorable skillset isn’t enough, his wisdom and commendably optimistic attitude speaks for itself in proving just how blessed we really are to have initially found him. In his engineering role here, his scope primarily includes design, plan preparation, contract documents, permitting, and rehabilitation projects, but he also works with the public and various municipalities to achieve regulatory compliance and improve overall public health. It’s not just in the workplace that he shines with his noble efforts: he also serves as President of the American Society of Civil Engineers Southern Idaho Section outside of the office, and has been on the board for several years now.

Not that we necessarily need one, but if there’s anyone to use as an excuse to throw an engineer party it’s this guy, so we ask the rest of you to join us in giving him the appropriate honor he deserves today – and every day for that matter. Happy 7 years Jesse! Here’s to many, many, and possibly even many more than that more (ball’s in your court, you know we’ll keep you forever if it’s up to us).
