Some cities were built on rivers, and some families were built on the cities that took them in. 🏭❄️
Paterson, New Jersey is known as the Silk City, a place of brick mills, roaring waterfalls, and long shifts that fed the American dream. For many Puerto Rican families who came north looking for steady work, towns like this meant a cold first winter, a crowded apartment, and neighbors who quickly became tios and tias. 🇵🇷
They carried a cuatro case, a pot of sofrito, and a stubborn pride that turned a mill town street into a little piece of home. Today those blocks still hold bakeries, botanicas, and family gatherings that sound a lot like the island. 🥤🎶
Did your family settle in New Jersey, or in another mill town in the Northeast? What do you remember about the way your elders made a new place feel like home?
