This morning, just like many of you, I sat with my cup of coffee listening to the latest overnight storm updates and anticipated forecasts. As intensification of soon to be Hurricane Helene continues, we understand that everyone is experiencing varying levels of anxiety. This storm is eerily similar to Hurricane Michael. It’s times like these that the unwavering support by design professionals, code officials, and contractors to implement current building code and wind speed provisions within residential and commercial construction are put on full display. In our industry we often hear comments such as, “this is over-designed”, “there’s no need for all the strapping/hardware”, “that home has survived 50 years without the current building codes requirements implemented”, etc., etc. There has always been ONE response for these types of comments. WE DESIGN TO KEEP OUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS SAFE, and this is the approach that all individuals in our industry must follow.
While evacuation is always the best method to ensure safety, we understand that many are forced or choose to shelter in place. If you find yourself in this position, we would like to make a few recommendations to assist in keeping you safe through the storm.
a) Stay away from all windows and doors. If glass, these components can be impacted by flying debris and resulting in fracture sending dangerous shards of material though the air at high rates of speed.
b) Seek out a centralized room or hallway of the structure that provides just enough room for inhabitants. Multiple support walls within close vicinity of inhabitants will increase the likelihood that the portion of structure will remain intact through the inclement weather.
c) If possible, place a mattress or similar above the space of shelter. The padding will help keep away or slow the rate of falling debris.
d) Keep various forms of communication devices within arm’s reach. Cellular phone towers can be impacted during these events so do not rely mobile phone alone.
Remember, we are always here for you. To assist in keeping you safe from Mother Nature and provide support during times like these. Please everyone keep safety as your top priority, and we’ll see you on the other side.
