The image below illustrates the damage that can occur in just 2-3 weeks when using pipe supports fabricated from carbon steel or 316 stainless steel in sulfuric acid service. These materials are not suitable for such environments as they degrade rapidly. This is the result of a fire in a valve pit. Even though it had been burnt on the surface, the 60" diameter fl**ge and pipe did not show and significant loss of material or strength. With a fit-for-service inspection and limited testing, the system was returned to service! Inspections are crucial for ensuring the structural integrity of equipment and systems, preventing potential hazards and ensuring operational safety.
