Local History Alert!

“Then and Now”

Corner of Washington Sreet X East Street

In the late 1920s, a Cities Service station stood proudly on the corner, serving travelers and townsfolk alike. In 1952, it was replaced by a sleek, modern version run by Matt Mersino and his son Stan, a father-son team known to everyone in town. Over time, the hum of gas pumps gave way to the calm of a chiropractic office that now occupies the space.

Next door (to the east), an old auto body shop once buzzed with repairs and paint jobs. Across the street, on the southeast corner, the Gulf Service Station opened its doors in 1935, proudly operated by Stimson Travis. Above it, the steeple of the First Baptist Church reached into the sky, until a lightning strike in April 1963 reduced it to ashes.

In the early 1970s, the Gulf Station changed hands, transformed into Villa Glass and eventually became Harmon Glass.

The corners changed, the people moved on, but their stories still linger in the bricks and beams of the buildings they left behind.
