This is the true meaning of longevity.

Deep beneath the icy waters of the North Atlantic, a Greenland shark continues to swim—an ancient survivor believed to be nearly 400 years old.

I plan to add Dielectric Loss to the TEm,n Rectangular Waveguide Calculator in the near future to allow visitors to determine the Total Attenuation for a TE-mode propagating in a Rectangular Waveguide. However, would anyone have interest in using the same style calculator for TM-modes in Rectangular Waveguide? If so, send me a note telling me of your interest in this new calculator.

I am also considering adding a Coax TEM-mode calculator, along with a Cylindrical Waveguide TE- and TM-mode cutoff frequency calculator. If you are interested in these new calculators, then please send me a note telling me of your interest in these new calculators.

The SiberSci, LLC website, https://sibersci.com/, has three calculators that are used by a large percentage of engineers working in the electromagnetics industry:

I was surprised in January 2023 when I received an e-mail from Prof. Stepan Lucyszyn, Professor of Millimetre-wave Systems, Imperial College London, notifying me that the equation I was using for calculating the Attenuation for TE-modes in Rectangular Waveguide was providing a number that was too high.

This equation was taken from the classical engineering reference written by S. Ramo, J.R. Whinnery, and T. Van Duzer, Fields and Waves in Communication Electronics, Wiley, 1965. Prof. Lucyszyn provided numerous references to calculations exhibiting lower Attenuation for Rectangular Waveguide TE-modes. I was disappointed that this error in Ramo, Whinnery, and van Duzer had not been recognized previously in its storied half-century of use in the industry.

I set aside time to investigate the problem, and discovered countless derivations of equations for predicting the Attenuation of TE-modes in Rectangular Waveguide. The majority of authors had simplified their derivations to yield an Attenuation equation that is only valid for the dominant Rectangular Waveguide TE1,0 mode, but I wanted a generalized solution that was valid for every TE-mode.

The Attenuation Equation derivation provided by R. Waldron, Theory of Guided Electromagnetic Waves, van Nostrand, 1969 was mathematically rigorous, and it replaced the Attenuation Equation derived by S. Ramo, J.R. Whinnery, and T. Van Duzer. The updated calculator now agrees with the Attenuation predictions provided by Prof. Lucyszyn.

Everyone should thank Prof. Lucyszyn for bringing this calculator problem to my attention.
