This week’s addition to the “50 Projects for 50 Years” series highlights our extensive experience providing structural engineering for historic renovations and adaptive reuse projects that transform historic buildings into vibrant new spaces.
The New York Life Building is a 12-story brick and brownstone high-rise completed in 1890 and generally regarded as Kansas City's first skyscraper and the first building in the city equipped with elevators. PMA Engineering participated in a $35 million restoration of the building, adding modern energy, communications, and environmental features.
The nine-story H.D. Lee building was built in the 1920’s to house the Lee Work Wear production factory. This renovation transformed the HD Lee Building from a utilitarian production warehouse into Piper Lofts luxury condominium complex. The renovation included the complete demolition and renovation of the interior of the building. Amenities include a small theatre, exercise center, rooftop pool, and penthouse accommodations for select tenants.
The J.I. Case Building was originally built in 1917 to manufacture large farm implements. At the time of its construction, this eight-story steel, brick, wood, and heavy timber structure contained the largest freight elevator east of the Mississippi River. The renovation converted the historic structure into Windows Lofts luxury condominiums. Highlights include a new rooftop penthouse, workout facility, clubhouse, and swimming pool.
