🌧️ WHERE DOES THE RAIN GO?

Ever wonder what happens after rain hits your roof, driveway, or street?

🌧️ Rain falls
🏠 It runs off roofs and buildings
🛣️ It flows across roads and parking lots
🌊 It enters storm drains and ditches
🐟 And eventually, it can reach our streams, rivers, lakes, and the ocean.

Along the way, stormwater can pick up litter, leaves, dirt, oil, and other pollutants.🗑️🛢️🍂🧪 → 💧

This Storm Water Awareness Week, take a moment to think about where the rain goes — and how you can help keep it clean.

🌱💧 Small actions make a difference:
• Pick up pet waste
• Keep leaves and trash out of storm drains
• Limit fertilizer and chemical runoff
• Plant rain gardens or other native vegetation
• Never dump anything into a storm drain

Rain belongs in our waterways — let’s help keep those waterways clean. 💙

The Bugs have been collected!🪲🕷️🦗🪰

Last week, SEE field staff retrieved rock bags from impaired streams to identify the macroinvertebrates (bugs). Rock bags were left in the streams for a month to allow bugs to colonize. The bugs that colonized the rock bags are identified under a microscope. The types of bugs found in the bags serve as a scientific tool to measure the stream health. The State of Maine's Biomonitoring unit receives the bug data and runs it through analytical software to determine the water quality class each stream attained based on the collected bags.

SEE had such a great time at this year’s Stormwater Conference! 🌧️ We are especially grateful to Cara, who had the opportunity to serve on the planning committee and help make this wonderful event possible! Both Cara and Phil enjoyed learning from industry professionals, catching up with colleagues, and meeting new faces. Events like this are always a great reminder of how much we can learn from one another. We’re already looking forward to the next one! 💧
