As Engineers Week comes to a close, we’re highlighting a project that reflects the role engineering plays in delivering essential services to rural communities.

Citizens Medical Center in Colby, Kansas, is a 184,000 SF, 25-bed critical access hospital designed to bring high-quality care closer to home in northwest Kansas.

Working alongside our partners at HFG Architecture, Farris Engineering provided full MEP, lighting, and fire protection engineering—designing systems that ensure reliability, efficiency, and continuous operation. From redundant HVAC systems to integrated controls and emergency power, the facility is built to perform—day in and day out.

In healthcare environments, performance isn’t optional—it’s critical. And behind every space designed for care is a system intentionally designed to support it.

This Engineers Week, Farris Engineering is proud to share that the BG Dean Mann Readiness Center in Sioux Falls, SD has received a 2026 ACEC Nebraska Engineering Excellence Merit Award.

Great engineering isn’t always visible—but its impact is.

Our team designed high-performance building systems for a 56,600 SF National Guard facility supporting training, readiness, and community use.

Key features include:
• Thermal ice storage HVAC system to reduce peak demand and improve resiliency
• LEED v4 Silver design strategies for long-term efficiency and sustainability
• Secure, mission-critical infrastructure aligned with DoD and UFC standards

Delivered within a $28M construction budget and under a compressed federal timeline, this project reflects the role engineering plays in strengthening both national defense and local communities.

We’re grateful to our partners at FEH Design and the South Dakota Department of the Military for the collaboration that made this project possible.

The Citizen Medical Center Replacement Facility is a brand-new 180,000 SF, 25-bed critical access medical center designed to serve a rural community in Northwest Kansas. Farris Engineering is providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, lighting, and fire protection/life safety engineering to support this state-of-the-art healthcare facility.

By integrating efficient HVAC systems with N+1 redundancy, high-efficiency boilers, and a full generator-backed electrical system, we helped create a resilient and energy-efficient environment. The cutting-edge building automation system will seamlessly control the HVAC, lighting, and patient room technology, optimizing operational efficiency and patient comfort.
