Steve Farrington meant far more to Morrissey Engineering than his title of partner could ever capture. He was a talented engineer, a respected leader, a mentor to many, and, most importantly, a dear friend and colleague.
Steve’s connection to Morrissey Engineering went back to the very beginning of his career. He started with the firm as an intern and was its sixth employee. Through his talent, dedication, and character, he grew to become a partner and an essential part of who we are as a company. Over the years, he helped shape countless projects, important decisions, and the future of MEI. He designed too many projects to list, but notable recent work included St. Wenceslaus Church, The Catalyst, and the new UNMC Student Housing.
But Steve’s legacy here cannot be measured simply by the work he completed or the projects he led.
Steve was genuinely engaged with people throughout the company, regardless of their position or role. Whether someone was just beginning their career or had worked alongside him for years, Steve made time for them. He listened. He solved problems. He shared what he knew and took genuine satisfaction in seeing others grow and succeed.
One of the things Steve often said was, “I keep people happy.” Those who knew Steve understand that it was more than a phrase. It reflected the way he approached both people and his work. Steve wanted to make things better, help people succeed, and make the experience better for those around him.
Steve was also remarkably level-headed. When challenges arose, he rarely let the pressure show outwardly. Instead, it seemed to sharpen his focus. He had a steady way of working through difficult situations, identifying what needed to be done, and moving toward a solution without creating unnecessary noise around the issue.
That combination - calmness, focus on solutions, deeply invested in people, and always willing to help - was uniquely Steve.
Many of us at Morrissey Engineering are better at what we do, and better people for having known him, because Steve took the time to invest in us.
As we reflect on his life, what weighs most heavily is not the loss of an accomplished engineer or leader. It is the loss of Steve as our colleague and our friend.
His unexpected passing has left an enormous absence at Morrissey Engineering and, more importantly, in the lives of the family and friends who loved him most. Our hearts remain with Steve’s wife, Laura, and their children – Will, Nora, Eva, and Parks.
We are grateful for the years we had with him, for everything he gave to this firm, and for the friendships and memories that will remain long after individual projects are complete.
Steve will be deeply missed. Morrissey Engineering is better because he was part of it, and we are better for having known him.
