Construction Observers are entry-level and/or limited experience positions to support our Construction Administration Sector by providing on-site construction observation for construction activities in the Omaha area. This would be done under the guidance of more senior engineering and construction administration staff. The primary goal will be to compare work products to the project’s approved plans and specifications and observe, document, and relay construction related information and issues to their supervisor. They will also compile technical data from drawings, field notes, and/or electronic data.
Duties and responsibilities
Technical
Limited understanding of the basics of horizontal construction including utilities, drainage, roadways, greenways, sidewalks, lighting, parking lots, and landscaping
Perform shop drawing reviews with assistance
Read construction plans and specifications, interpret documents, and perform simple mathematic calculations
Observe and verify that construction methods are generally in accordance plans and specifications
Verify that material and equipment certificates, operation and maintenance manuals, and other data required by the specifications have been provided
Document and facilitate information to supervisor including site photos, documenting quantities, and providing daily logs
Report discrepancies from the plans and specifications immediately to supervisor
Ask questions to learn
Read and understand assigned technical, municipal, and State manuals as assigned
Attend construction and office meetings as directed
Follow technical aspects and policies of the Department and Company
Analyze technical problems; devise new or improved techniques, approaches, and alternative solutions; and communicate those to supervisor for approval and implementation
Use company’s current technology as much as practicable to document and communicate
Participate in scheduled Team meetings and, as needed, project meetings
Personnel Leadership
Attend Company and Department meetings and events if possible
Client and Business Development
Participate in civic and community events
Seek opportunities to learn about our services
Qualifications
Required qualifications include:
High School Diploma
Self-motivated, engaged, and team-oriented
Good organizational and communication skills
Attention to detail and willingness to learn
Willingness to take direction
Energetic, flexible, and forward thinking
Preferred qualifications include:
Associate’s degree or related technical certificate or equivalent construction experience
1-5 years of construction experience and/or engineering, surveying, and/or construction industry internships
Experience in Microsoft Office applications
Retired industry professionals encouraged to apply.
Working conditions
The assignment will require occasional evening and weekend work and working in collaborative, fast-paced, and client-driven environment. It may include out of town work assignments.
Physical requirements
The assignment may occasionally require walking, standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time, extended travel, using shovels and hammers, and carrying equipment and materials up to 50 pounds.
Job Type: Part-time/Seasonal. Full time may be considered depending upon skills and qualifications.
