Day 2 - THE PROBLEM

The arena can look okay from the stands and still have problems.

This is why we pay attention to more than what an arena looks like from the surface.

Clods, inconsistent moisture, compaction and uneven material can all affect how footing works.

The goal isn’t simply to make dirt look pretty.

The goal is to create a consistent working surface.

And sometimes getting there means breaking things down before you can build them back up.

Kole Price and Golden Coins set a new world record of 237.5 in the Million Dollar Competition at The Run For A Million in Las Vegas at the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center, with awards presented by Wolverine Boots and Apparel.

The 2020 stallion, Golden Coins, affectionately known as Zeus, is sired by Spooks Gotta Gun and out of Electric Cha Ching, owned by Coin Toss LLC and bred by Silver Spurs Equine.

Prior to Kole Price and Golden Coins setting the new world record for a reining score of 237.5, the record was held by Andrea Fappani and Customs Legends, who won the 2007 National Reining Breeders Classic. The record has stood unbroken for 19 years until this year's The Run For A Million.

Reflecting on his preparation leading into the record-breaking run, Price explained how he worked to stay focused despite the atmosphere surrounding the competition.

“I did a really good job this year of blocking out the crowd and just riding my horse. Last night we prepared really well, it was almost too intense. This morning I got him out and I just tinkered for about an hour and I told Kelsey, he's ready. These special horses just rise to the occasion. I knew that if I had a clean run and ran my run that he was gonna do what he needed to do,” Price said.

Price recalled how the arena felt the moment he hit the ground of the arena.

“It was very slow, very peaceful and very quiet. I've gone through my run so many times in my head that I had an idea what it was gonna feel like. I picked that song because it has a lot of rhythm, and I wrote "flow" on my hand because that horse has so much pattern flow to him and rhythm that that was what I wanted to execute with a beautiful pattern and he was spot on,” Price said.

Before his record breaking run Price recalled an interview where he was asked, “what was it going to take to win the competition?”

“A score no one has seen yet,” Price said.

Price thanked his wife for all her help during late night rides as another set of eyes preparing for the competition. The couple is expecting another addition to their family in a few months, to make them a family of four. He also thanked the Roberts family for always believing in him. The belief pulled through early on when he asked them to buy Zeus as a 4-year-old with only $865 dollars to his name and they never questioned Price. Adding his thanks to many more individuals including: Don and Joetta Bell, Jason Donahue, and everyone on their team.

“It is not about all the wins. It's about how you know you have your group and they're there with you,” Price said.

Great arenas aren't always found. They have to be built.

The finished arena is what everyone sees.

What they don't always see is what it takes to get there.
