Michigan Aggregates Association

Michigan Aggregates Association The Michigan Aggregates Association is Michigan’s leading voice and advocate for the aggregates industry.

Our members who represent stone, sand, gravel, recycled products and slag producers along with the equipment manufacturers and service providers are responsible for the production and delivery of essential raw materials used in our homes, buildings, roads, bridges and public works projects. The MAA provides unity among our members for a variety of daily operations and promotes high and ethical bus

iness standards that are both environmentally sound and safe. Our members work with local communities and various youth groups to inform them about the many uses and benefits provided by this natural resource. Michigan produces around 70 million tons of aggregate material (sand and gravel, crushed stone, slag, crushed concrete) annually of which about 40% is used as construction aggregates; 38% for road base construction; 12% for asphalt pavement; 10% as construction fill; along with various applications for concrete products such as blocks, bricks, pipes, plaster (drywall), snow and ice control, filtration, golf courses, railroad ballast, roofing material, and other miscellaneous uses. Michigan’s aggregates industry employs approximately 8,000 highly-skilled men and women. Remember, everything we consume on a daily basis is either grown or mined.

A big thank you to MAA member Stoneco Michigan, along with industry partners Michigan Paving & Materials Company and Cadillac Asphalt LLC, for showcasing the journey of aggregate materials from the quarry to finished asphalt pavement.

The tour provided the Director of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and MDOT’s COO with a firsthand look at the direct connection between the Ottawa Lake Quarry and the Cadillac Asphalt Dix HMA Plant in Detroit, highlighting how locally sourced aggregates play a critical role in building and maintaining Michigan’s transportation infrastructure.

The visit also highlighted the asphalt emulsion production process at the Michigan Paving & Materials Monroe Oil Terminal. Seeing the full process firsthand, from raw aggregate production to the final pavement placed on MDOT highways, reinforces the essential role our industry plays in supporting safe, durable, and reliable infrastructure across Michigan.

Happy road repair season 🚧

This year might look a little different as Governor Whitmer rolls out a nearly $2-billion-a-year road funding deal with the Legislature!

“This is a big investment that was long overdue,” she said. “There’s still going to be more work to do here, no question, but this will represent a significant improvement in the infrastructure we all rely on."

Governor Gretchen Whitmer said Wednesday it is time again for drivers to be on the lookout for orange barrels and construction workers.
