The skills are already there. The opportunity might be bigger than you think.

Moving from residential weatherization into commercial building diagnostics can feel intimidating. Different buildings, different clients, and higher stakes. But the fundamentals don't suddenly disappear.

Understanding airflow, pressure, airtightness, and how an enclosure performs gives weatherization professionals a skill set that can translate directly into commercial work. The challenge is getting outside the boundaries of where that expertise has traditionally been used and making sure people know you're capable of doing the work.

Because in some markets, no one else is doing it.

Howdy! 🤠

Will we see you at Build Show LIVE next week in San Antonio?

Stop by booth 606 to see how to wrangle those air sealing details and test for issues. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

And I’m sure Willie and Waylon would have added “building scientists” into the list of professions in “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow up to be Cowboys” if they had the room to fit it in.

77% indoor humidity. In the winter.

Wallpaper was coming off the walls. Insulation was dripping with water. Ductwork had to be replaced. And the people living and sleeping in the building were dealing with the consequences.

For weatherization professionals, the skills used every day to understand airflow, moisture, and the building envelope can translate directly to bigger buildings and bigger problems.

In this case, that expertise didn't just create a new revenue opportunity. It helped address a serious indoor environment and protect the people occupying the building.

That's the value of knowing how to diagnose the building, not just treat the symptoms.

Our latest Flow Lab episode takes weatherization diagnostics into a bigger building and shows just how transferable those skills can be.

Sam is joined by John Pady and Dan Maksymiw from CEDA for a live conversation centered around a troubled firehouse dealing with high humidity, uncomfortable occupants, and HVAC fixes that weren't solving the problem. The diagnostics ultimately pointed back to something more fundamental: a missing air barrier.

They dig into multi-fan blower door testing, commercial airtightness metrics, pressure uniformity, repair strategies, and why HVAC equipment can't compensate for an open envelope.

It's also a look at the opportunity for weatherization agencies and building performance pros to take the skills they already have into light commercial work and solve bigger building problems.

To celebrate , we have some unconventional uses of flashing tapes we installed to convert a vented attic on a 1992 home in Wilmington, NC to an encapsulated, conditioned attic.

We were able to accomplish this without spray foam using products with minimal off gassing to provide optimal IAQ and protect the mechanical equipment in the attic.

The goal was to explore an alternative approach to bring mechanical systems into conditioned space in the humid southeastern US. We wanted an option that would be viable for those who are chemically sensitive and minimize risk to evaporator coils, all while keeping it around a similar budget as traditional methods. So far, things are looking good!

A bit of a cliffhanger ending I know, but more to come soon.

A big thanks to the organizers of for including us this year. Keeping buildings dry, healthy, and durable is a big part of our mission, so it’s an honor to participate 👍

Energy OutWest was the kind of week we look forward to all year.

Sam and Noah taught in workshops and sessions on air sealing and blower door testing. We also put the new duct simulator to work for live demonstrations of duct leakage, static pressure, and airflow. Watching the numbers move in real time as conditions change gives people something to hold onto when they get back to the field.

The MAD House came along too, showing how mechanical systems and the building enclosure can work against each other when things go sideways. It is one thing to describe that interaction and another to stand there and watch it happen.

The best part was catching up with friends and hearing about the good work happening in weatherization right now. Thanks to everyone who stopped by the booth and shared what their programs are up to.

The blower door is THE quality assurance tool for home builders 👍

07/14/2026

We spotted these ratcheting zip ties at the International Builders' Show (IBS) and I immediately wondered how they’d work on flex duct.

Two things stand out. First, they pull a full circle connection instead of the teardrop shape you get with a standard strap, which means better compression on the inner liner. Second, you can get them tight by hand, so you’re covered if you’re on a job without a Panduit gun.

The tradeoff is cost. They run more than traditional straps, so they probably make the most sense as a backup pack in the truck rather than an everyday swap.

They’re called Viper Clamp and you can find them on Amazon if you want to test them yourself.

Blower door testing isn't just for homes.

It's also used to verify that fire suppression systems will perform when they're needed most.

Before a clean agent system is trusted to protect a server room, refinery, or other critical space, the enclosure has to be tight enough to hold the suppressant long enough to extinguish a fire. That's where enclosure integrity testing comes in.

Because when safety depends on the building performing as designed, guessing isn't an option.

Catch the full Flow Lab episode with Michael Allen and Greg Iseral to learn how blower door testing is being used far beyond residential construction.
