Nearly four years after completion, this submerged gravel wetland is thriving and has created a habitat for local plants, insects and coastal birds. Stormwater performance as follows: greater than 80% sediments removal from a large commercial parking area; nearly 70% phosphorus reduction; and 60% nitrogen removal.

We are so very proud to be a part of this design-build team that will create wetlands along Ayers Creek. This project includes creation of nearly four acres of tidal and non-tidal wetlands. Construction is slated to begin in the late Spring of 2019.

As stated by the Chesapeake Bay Program, wetlands are critical in supporting the healthy waters and diverse wildlife of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Located where land meets water, wetlands act like a sponge, soaking up storm surges and trapping polluted runoff. Wetlands also provide habitat to hundreds of fish, birds, mammals and invertebrates. Protecting, restoring and creating wetlands are key to promote clean water, healthy habitats and a restored Bay.

“It takes ten attaboys to erase one oops!” That’s what one of my first mentors told me at the DuPont Company, where I served as their corporate Civil Engineer. Today and each time I receive a nice thank you note, such as this one, the message conveys so much more to me. Someone taking the time to write and tell me they are pleased with my performance: 1) motivates me to do the best possible job for all clients; 2) reassures me that they value professional engineering services; and 3) simply brings joy to the day. This is not to be confused with understanding self-confidence in my consulting practice, but rather understanding that our business is to do good work for good clients.

We are so very pleased to celebrate a milestone anniversary of providing our professional civil engineering services. 10 years ago today Carpenter Engineering, LLC organized as a start-up consulting engineering firm. We have been engaged in a vast array of projects situated in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, and we have been leveraged as a civil engineer in multidiscipline projects. Our scope of services have been something as simple as permitting a small pole barn structure for a neighbor, and have been as complex as preparing a regional wastewater treatment and disposal system.

This is a photograph of a wastewater disposal system under construction in New Jersey that Carpenter Engineering, LLC designed. When the community is built out, the system will treat and dispose 340,000 gallons per day of domestic sewage. The system occupies a 2-acre surface area of rotating low pressure dosing drainfields and can serve more than 1,000 single family homes. In addition to design of this system, we provided construction review, pressure testing and as-built construction services.

Carpenter Engineering, LLC is looking forward to another decade of doing what we like to do for our clients!

Spending low tide this afternoon along the Christina River. Lots of history to see. A crane rail crossing is revealed when the water is less than "three feet high and rising" - J. Cash. At high tide, we will be another five feet deep.

Back to the World of Concrete this year for professional development, and information sharing with contractors, engineers, architects, and material suppliers. Here is a photo illustrating what a 2-pound spud wrench will do to a human head when falling from this height. Wear your personal protective equipment (PPE) and get your tools a lanyard when working from heights!

As a small business owner, we rely heavily on our relationships with vendors that help us: 1) remain productive; 2) cost effective to our clients; and 3) serve a wide array of clients that enjoy big firm productivity with a small firm personal and accountable touch.

In the last two business days FedEx Office in Newark, Delaware has allowed us to remotely and seamlessly provide permit drawings to a client in order to get a much needed permit issued and pre-construction meeting scheduled, which happened just this afternoon. But even more recently, FedEx Office in Newark, Delaware was able to issue us color print production while the entire block of Main Street in Newark was dark due to lightning strikes and thunder storms, which blackened our office as well. These drawings will be utilized for a public hearing tomorrow morning to rezone a property for our client. The value of services this FedEx Office location offers is not described on a menu board or website, but simply are an additional value as the staff wants to help us succeed and fulfill the needs of our clients.

We don't know the magic that happens within FedEx Office, but we do know they have proven to be a much needed support for Carpenter Engineering. In the past 9 years, we have often joked that the FedEx Office on Main Street is the "Newark Office" for Carpenter Engineering. By first name we know the clerks, office managers, regional technician, and regional manager. We have also witnessed these colleagues of ours to be promoted within their company. We genuinely appreciate the people that run this office, and we view them as an asset to our firm. Thank you and thank you. Photos included illustrate print productions during a dark office, respectively.

A Bridge Over Piney Creek -Carpenter Engineering prepared steel sheeting and earth anchoring designs for the bridge abutments at the new crossing of Old Elk Neck Road over Piney Creek in Cecil County. Our tasks included preparation of design drawings and specifications to permit the installation of the new pre-cast concrete arch, which spans 50 feet at the creek bed. As construction is nearing completion, our scope has been expanded to include preparation of as-built drawings for verification of the contractor’s work.

Riding the Rail - Carpenter Engineering was pleased to return to a horse training center in North East, Maryland to observe training track improvements that we designed and had recently been constructed. We were engaged to design an improvement plan to remove a low point in the training track, which eliminates the equine athletes from running uphill. Race horses expel more energy to run uphill and in the long term, uphill running proves to be a detriment to their speed.

Carpenter Engineering’s design efforts included preparation of construction plans to facilitate elevating the lowest part of the track 18 feet, vertically, and movement of 20,000 cubic yards of earth. The work was completed last year and the training track looks beautiful.

Last day of WOC 2016. 53,000 attendees for the educational training. We spent the morning learning about advanced concrete repair for structural distress, and retrofitting structures against terroristic activity. Very good information available at this conference. Next year's WOC is scheduled for January 16 - 20!
