The Northern California Chapter is hosting a casual meet-up this week during the 13th National Conference on Earthquake Engineering in Portland, and we'd love for you to join us.

Date: Wednesday, July 15, 2026
Time: 1:30–2:15 p.m.
Location: Room D135, Oregon Convention Center

You are welcome to bring your conference-provided lunch and we'll provide Voodoo Doughnuts for dessert. This will be an opportunity to connect with colleagues and peers working on earthquake resilience in Northern California.

Several members of the NorCal Chapter Board will be there, and we're eager to hear your ideas for events and other ways we can serve our members over the coming year. If you'd like to learn more about what we've been working on, our Annual Report highlights the chapter's accomplishments from the past fiscal year.

Whether you're a current Northern California Chapter member or just interested in learning more, you're welcome to stop by.

We hope to see you Wednesday!

The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute - EERI Learning from Earthquakes (LFE) program continues to monitor the impacts of the M7.2 and M7.5 earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24, 2026. LFE’s Virtual Earthquake Reconnaissance Team (VERT) activated last week to develop a report on preliminary impacts.

Search and rescue efforts are underway across the country, with more than 1,400 fatalities reported at this time. More than 700,000 people are estimated to have been exposed to strong or very strong shaking during the earthquake. There are widespread reports of multiple building collapses across Caracas and La Guaira, prompting people to sleep outside or in their cars due to damage to residential buildings and potential aftershocks. More than 13,000 people remain displaced. Oil leaks have been reported at some Venezuelan refineries and port traffic in La Guaira has been diverted to Puerto Cabello due to damage. Access to the area remains difficult as major highways are closed except for official access or blocked in some areas. The Simon Bolivar International Airport in Caracas is also closed after suffering heavy damage.

The full VERT report is available here, on the Learning from Earthquakes website:

If you are interested in contributing to future reconnaissance efforts, join VERT.

If you have information to share, are part of an organization that is planning to conduct earthquake reconnaissance, or wish to be updated on opportunities to participate in LFE activities responding to this earthquake, please share information via the Google form here.

EERI’s response to earthquakes through the Learning from Earthquakes program is made possible by the generous support of the many donors to the LFE Endowment Fund.
