Underpinning Construction Process
The underpinning construction process is typically carried out in two main phases:
1. Design Phase
This phase includes structural evaluation of the existing building, soil investigation, and preparation of engineering plans. The purpose is to determine the appropriate underpinning method and ensure the stability of the structure during and after construction.
2. Construction Phase
This phase involves site preparation, excavation, installation of temporary supports, and concrete work. The work is performed in controlled sections to safely transfer the building load to a deeper and more stable foundation.
The underpinning process is undertaken to strengthen and stabilize the existing foundation. In addition, it allows for the creation of new usable space, such as constructing a basement beneath an existing building.
