When a vacuum vessel needs precision sealing surfaces and other features, post-weld machining is a must.

Welding causes distortion from weld shrinkage that cannot be avoided.

Machining a weldment after welding allows tight tolerances on otherwise out-of-tolerance features.

Post-weld machining these large vacuum vessels for DOE national labs maintains tight flatness and dimensional tolerances on the sealing surfaces.

Imagine solving a 3D jigsaw puzzle where assembling one area blocks access to another area.

Once everything is in place, you would need to disassemble large sections of the puzzle to make changes to the first pieces.

That’s the scenario Meyer Tool is used to when welding complex pressure piping assemblies.

Careful planning and ex*****on are required to ensure that every piece of B31.3 code piping meets stringent weld quality and testing requirements.

These piping spools are attached to the top plate of a large helium liquification cold box.

Astronomers use custom aluminum liquid helium cryostats for high-altitude telescopes.

These ultra-light LHe cryostats are suspended from a giant balloon over Antarctica for weeks at a time.

Hold time is critical to these experiments, ensuring that the detectors will be cooled to 4K for the entire duration of the flight.

Running liquid nitrogen through the internal piping while the vessel is sealed and under vacuum tests the entire system to extreme temperatures.

The seven plates on the top are for cooling the superconducting IR detectors with liquid helium.

Building a particle accelerator comes with many unique challenges.

One is the question of how to supply 1000s of Amps in current from a room-temperature source to a superconducting magnet at 4K.

Current leads answer the question by cooling the wires with cryogenic vapors in the path between high and low temperatures.

We’ve built many different current leads, like this assembly for Fermilab.
