Here’s a closer look at two motorcycle camshaft covers under X-ray: an OEM component and an aftermarket replacement. On the surface, both appear well-machined and ready for installation. Under X-ray, the internal story changes.

The OEM cover reveals porosity, internal voids, and material inconsistencies that are invisible to the naked eye. These defects can compromise strength, sealing performance, and long-term reliability under vibration and thermal cycling.

The aftermarket cover tells a different story. The X-ray shows uniform density, consistent wall thickness, and cleaner internal structure. The build quality is evident in the material integrity throughout the component.

A good inspection starts with the right imaging method.

This aluminum windshield wiper casting was first examined using traditional 2D X-ray, providing clear insight into overall structure and material distribution. To further evaluate internal integrity in a high-stress region, the part was then inspected using industrial CT.

The CT data revealed concentrated internal voiding near a critical junction at the base of the wiper handle. In this geometry, only CT provides the three-dimensional localization and volumetric detail needed to fully characterize porosity and understand its potential impact on part performance.

Both radiography and CT play important roles in non-destructive testing. In this case, CT was the appropriate tool to resolve internal features that could not be fully assessed in two dimensions.
