⚡ Fire Prevention Week | October 4–10
Fire prevention starts with recognizing potential hazards before they become emergencies.
This Fire Prevention Week, take a few minutes to look around your home or workplace for common electrical warning signs:
🔌 Don’t overload outlets or power strips. Too many devices can cause wiring and connections to overheat.
⚠️ Replace damaged cords and plugs. Frayed insulation, exposed wiring, cracked plugs and loose connections shouldn’t be ignored.
🔥 Pay attention to heat, odors and discoloration. Warm outlets or switches, buzzing sounds, flickering lights, burning smells or discoloration can indicate an electrical problem that needs attention.
🔋 Use extension cords properly. They’re intended for temporary use—not as a permanent substitute for properly installed wiring.
💡 Use the correct lamps and electrical products. Follow fixture wattage requirements and use products that are properly rated for their intended location and application.
🚨 Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure alarms are working, replace batteries when needed, and replace alarms according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
And when an electrical problem requires repair or modification, leave the work to a qualified electrical professional.
A few minutes spent checking for electrical hazards today can help prevent a fire tomorrow.
