Adding a New Revenue Stream to a Veterinarian Practice

As an owner or an operator of a veterinarian practice you always need to work on discovering additional revenue sources since additional revenue sources will bring more money in and without that your practice can’t grow and reach financial stability.
One simple and easy way to increase your revenue stream is to invest in a system to process your medical sharps waste on-site. Such a system is a new innovative eco-friendly device called the sharpsPROTM. By processing your waste on-site, enables you to apply a “MEDICAL WASTE FEE” to your invoicing. After only a few months, the initial investment of purchasing the sharpsPRO System can be completely paid for. With the exception of purchasing additional sharpsCAN containers which are very inexpensive, the disposal fees virtually become a free and clear revenue stream.
Processing sharps waste using the sharpsPRO is simple and extremely easy to use and there is no maintenance required. Also, by processing on-site you also get the added benefits of eliminating secondary containers, the need to fill out manifest forms and you also eliminate the waste collection fees from your disposal service contractor.
These added benefits simplifies the management of your sharps waste while increasing your financial bottom line. You are also processing and disposing of your sharps waste responsibly and helping the environment.
It’s a win-win situation!
If for example a practice treats 20 animals per day and if a fee of $1.00 per syringe were applied to an invoice, which by the way is below average for a “MEDICAL WASTE FEE”, the sharpsPRO System is paid for in 3 months. The added revenue stream to a practice is $960 per month!

The regulation of medical waste has been evolving and is governed differently by federal and state
agencies. The main regulatory requirements include:
the medical waste must be sterilized prior to disposal
complete traceability of all treated medical sharps waste
if a medical sharps container is used, it must be FDA 510(k) cleared
The sharpsPRO™ system including the Model 100 and sharpsCAN™ meets all of these regulatory
requirements for the treatment of medical sharps biohazardous waste:
The sharpsPRO™ uses a dry heat thermal treatment to sterilize and physically change the
characteristics of the sharps waste.
Biological indicator Microbial spore strips containing B. Stearothermophilus were successfully
inactivated, thus demonstrating the validation of the sharpsPRO™ sterility effectiveness (dry heat
thermal system).
An independent test laboratory determined the sharpsCAN™ sharps container met OSHA’s
Bloodborne Pathogen Standard 29 CFR 1910.1030, exceeded the ASTM Puncture Resistance
Standard F2132-01 (2008) and met CSA Z316.6-07 Toppling Resistance Standard.
A 510(k) premarket submission including the standards testing and results was submitted to the
FDA. The sharpsCAN™ received FDA clearance in July of 2013.
The sharpsPRO™ also includes an automated cradle-to-grave tracking system insuring complete
traceability of all treated medical sharps waste meeting standards in the EPA Medical Waste
Treatment Act in 1988.

Did you know....
U.S. healthcare facilities spend over $10 billion annually to dispose of biohazardous waste materials. This waste material creates exposure risks to employees and patients and is harming our environment.

Every year about 600,000 to 800,000 needlestick incidents take place in healthcare. Roughly 16,000 involve needles containing infected blood product. The most serious pathogens involved are HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. The cost of needlestick injury follow-up in the U.S. per incident is around $3,000. A total of $3 billion is spent annually in the U.S. on needlestick injuries.

Over 8 billion syringes are used in the U.S. per year. That equates to thousands of tons of polypropylene plastic that is being incinerated and dumped into landfills. Medical waste incinerators are one of the nation’s leading emissions sources of persistent, toxic, bioaccumulative pollutants such as dioxins and mercury. In addition, the transportation that hauls regulated medical waste long distances to incinerators also emit toxic pollutants. Exposure to these pollutants threatens public health.

The sharpsPRO operates a low heat zero emission process that converts biohazardous waste into a recyclable non-hazardous by-product which eliminates incineration and emission of toxic pollutants.

The main benefits of using the sharpsPRO are SAFETY, SAVINGS and SUSTAINABILITY.

Facts about medical waste
$10 billion is spent annually on waste disposal in the U.S.
600,000 - 800,000 needle sticks occur every year.
As of 2011, 7.8 billion syringes are used every year in the U.S. This number excludes veterinarian care which generates a significant amount for large animal and livestock healthcare. The syringe is made of polypropylene and is completely recyclable.
Safety
By processing sharps medical waste on-site greatly reduces the chances of needlestick.

Savings
The sharpsPRO can drastically reduce or eliminate monthly biohazardous waste collection fees.

Sustainability
The sharpsPRO produces a non-hazardous recyclable by-product. Recycling reduces the consumption of raw, finite resources, such as oil and propene gas to generate new plastic. There is an 88% reduction in energy usage if plastic is produced from plastic.

The sharpsPRO Model 100 provides a simple and innovative method for on-site processing of sharps medical waste. The sharpsPRO operates a low heat zero emission process that converts biohazardous waste into non-hazardous waste that can be recycled or disposed of in standard trash.
On-site processing empowers all users and generators of medical sharps waste to create a safer work place and work towards the elimination of harmful environmental impact that medical waste can cause.
