From family farming to oyster farming.

A new Southern Living feature tells the story of a North Carolina family that turned an interest in shellfish aquaculture into a growing oyster business on the Crystal Coast.

Nancy Dupuis grew up in a farming family in Canada. After moving to North Carolina, she took a shellfish-farming course and eventually launched an oyster operation with her son, Maxime “Max” Cloutier.

Today, they grow oysters year-round using floating mesh bags, carefully managing stocking density and space as the oysters develop. Their first commercial harvest in 2024 produced approximately 100,000 oysters, and the family hopes to grow that to one million annually by 2030.

Deer pressure is creating a growing challenge for Massachusetts farmers.

In Concord, MA, local wildlife officials estimate deer populations at 75–100 per square mile, and farmers are using a mix of electric fencing, hunting programs, and permanent barriers to protect crops. At Barrett’s Mill Farm, about $15,000 in state funding will help support the installation of eight-foot fencing around its fields.

It started with a lobsterman’s idea.

Associated Industries of Massachusetts is celebrating Manufacturing Month with a feature on how Riverdale Mills grew from a practical challenge on the water into a global manufacturing business.

Riverdale founder Jim Knott Sr., a part-time commercial lobsterman, wanted a better alternative to the heavy wooden traps fishermen had relied on for generations. Working with his son and current Riverdale Mills CEO, Jim Knott Jr., he developed Aquamesh® welded wire mesh.

Just as important, lobstermen from Massachusetts to Maine helped test the new material and shared the firsthand knowledge that helped make it better.

More than 45 years later, Aquamesh is used in more than 60% of North American lobster traps, and that original innovation helped build a Massachusetts manufacturing company producing thousands of welded wire mesh configurations for industries around the world.

A new lobster season begins on the Bay of Fundy.

For fishermen and coastal communities across Atlantic Canada, the start of the season marks another chapter of hard work, preparation and tradition on the water.

Building an oyster reef starts with infrastructure.

A new Washington Post video highlights how the Billion Oyster Project is rebuilding oyster habitat in New York Harbor by giving discarded shells a second life.

Since 2014, the organization has collected more than 3.2 million pounds of oyster shell from over 70 New York City restaurants. Instead of going to waste, those shells become part of the physical foundation for new reef habitat.

The process is a powerful reminder that oyster restoration requires more than oysters alone:

recovered shell → reef structure → oyster settlement → living habitat

Successful reefs depend on hard substrate, three-dimensional structure, good water flow, and materials that can remain in demanding marine environments over time.

From eroding creek banks to changing water flows, engineers are using a range of stabilization systems to protect infrastructure and strengthen long-term resilience.

In Delran, New Jersey, plans call for gabion baskets, rock revetments, and retaining structures to stabilize the Rancocas Creek shoreline and help protect municipal wastewater and stormwater infrastructure.

Along South Boulder Creek in Colorado, engineers combined structural retaining walls with vegetated stabilization to protect an erosion-prone bank against anticipated higher water flows.

Projects like these demonstrate the important role retaining and erosion-control systems play in protecting shorelines, streambanks, slopes, and critical infrastructure.

As data centers continue to be built across the country, communities are paying closer attention to the security of the sites that support this critical infrastructure.

Fort Smith, Arkansas, recently approved development standards requiring future data centers to include an eight-foot perimeter fence. The move follows another recent data-center project in Georgia seeking approval for fencing higher than eight feet, an indication that perimeter security is becoming an increasingly important part of data-center planning.
