Rising tariffs, fuel costs, and global logistics challenges are reshaping the economics of Maine’s lobster industry.

Jim Knott Jr., CEO of Riverdale Mills, explains that steel costs, driven by tariffs as high as 50% and sustained supply chain pressures, are now structurally higher than in years past.

“Logistics is now a much larger part of production than it was five years ago,” said Knott.

For fishermen and trap builders alike, it’s become the new normal. A stark reminder of how global policy and supply chains directly impact local industries.

MIT News article: A streamlined way to make steel could reduce America’s reliance on imports

Innovation in steelmaking could reshape American manufacturing.

For manufacturers like Riverdale Mills Corporation, which purchases thousands of tons of steel annually to produce welded wire mesh for critical industries, sourcing domestic steel remains challenging.

That’s why we’re encouraged by the work of Laureen Meroueh, MIT alum and founder of Hertha Metals, whose team has developed a single-step steelmaking process using an electric arc furnace powered by natural gas and electricity. This process can reduce energy use by ~30%, lower costs by ~25%, reduce emissions, and expand U.S. steel production.

Innovations like this could help the U.S. produce more of the steel that supports our infrastructure and manufacturing economy.

Congratulations to Laureen Meroueh and the Hertha Metals team.
