Today is World Patient Safety Day.

This year's WHO theme is "Safe care for noncommunicable diseases", and it's a theme that belongs in the operating room.

The patients most at risk on the table are often those living with conditions such as diabetes, vascular disease, obesity or cancer that can mean reduced perfusion, lower tissue tolerance to pressure, and existing neuropathy.

For them, a poorly supported limb or an unrelieved pressure point isn't a minor detail- it's a complication waiting to happen.

When locked your stirrup boots should still freely float-rocking back and forth.

No float? The leg and foot angle can’t naturally adjust as you position the patient. The result? Pressure has nowhere to go but up the leg... straight to the hip.

In lithotomy positioning, proper alignment is essential for both patient support and surgical access. A stirrup that accommodates a broad range of patient heights helps clinicians position patients consistently, without compromising stability or comfort.

That range matters most at the extremes. If a boot can’t travel far enough down the rod for a shorter patient, it forces compensation elsewhere - an incorrect leg angle when raising into high lithotomy or lowering into low lithotomy, sometimes placing unintended pressure on the hip.
