Our guy Jason Winchenbach is at it again. Cheers to our local commercial guys, being out on the ocean for 5 days at a time isn't easy. It’s easy to look at social media and get blinded by the flash. It seems like most anglers are concerned with having their pictures on the front of magazines, or videos making them look like hard core commercial fishermen. We see the brand-new, million-dollar center consoles, the custom sportfishers with endless wraps, and the influencers fishing all day on someone else’s dime. They get the likes, the sponsorships, and the praise.
But let’s be real about who actually keeps this industry alive and puts food on our tables.
It’s the commercial fishermen.
The guys waking up at 2:00 AM in the freezing cold, working on boats that have seen decades of hard salt and rust. They don’t have a safety net or a family trust to fall back on if the bite is slow or the weather turns ugly. If they don’t catch, they don’t get paid. Their livelihood—and their family's future—is tied to every single haul.
Commercial fishing isn't a hobby or a lifestyle brand. It is grueling, dangerous, exhausting work. It requires actual grit, generational knowledge, and a level of mental toughness that you can't buy with a trust fund.
Let’s start shifting the respect to where it’s actually earned. Less hype for the weekend warriors with deep pockets, and more respect for the blue-collar mariners who sweat, bleed, and grind out a living on the open ocean.
Respect the fleet.
