After all these years, this thought still pops up and blows my mind: those rocker arms will move back and forth hundreds of millions of times, for hundreds of thousands of miles, and if a single one of them doesn't do its job, the engine doesn't work.

It's like a finely tuned watch, but this watch has to control explosions thousands of times every second in order to move us down the road. Enough pondering though, surfaces are clean and it's time to get a new valve cover gasket installed. Happy Friday, have a great (and warm-ish, finally) weekend!

I guess we're specializing in trucks now ๐Ÿ˜‚. Doesn't matter to us, broken vehicles come in, fixed vehicles drive out. German luxury car, full size pickup, domestic sedan, we've fixed them all. We don't do inspections or alignments, only diagnostics and repair. If it doesn't run like it should, give us a call.

This is the oil pickup tube from a 2008 Ford F-250. The truck had codes for timing, so we're timing it, but this isn't a normal chain stretch or cam phaser issue. One of the plastic chain guides broke. Not just broke, but exploded, leaving chunks of plastic all over the inside of the engine. We cleaned up what we could reach, but to be sure, we removed the oil pan to check for more and found several pieces of plastic timing guide in the bottom of the oil pan.

So again, to be sure, we checked the oil pickup tube. Every piece of plastic in these pictures was INSIDE the oil pickup, partially blocking the screen. If just a few more pieces like this had gotten lodged in the pickup, the engine would have lost oil pressure and by the time the "low oil pressure" warning showed up on the dash, it would have been too late. If you're in a situation where you see debris in the oil pan, drop the pan and check the pickup, doing so might just save your engine. Or even better yet, if your truck has timing codes, give us a call and let us handle it.

โ€ผ๏ธ Public Service Announcement: If you have a 2006 to 2016 BMW with a 6 cylinder engine and you've recently changed your serpentine/accessory belt, this is your warning. Read on, it might save you from replacing your engineโ€ผ๏ธ

The engines in the above cars (specifically the 3.0L engines) have a tendency to eat their accessory belts. Oil leaks onto the belt which makes the belt weak, then the belt shreds and frays. The frayed belt gets caught by the harmonic balancer, which forces the belt through the front main seal, where it gets chopped up by the timing chain and ends up in the oil pan. Then the chopped up belt gets sucked up the oil pickup and starves the engine.

If I hadn't seen it myself I wouldn't believe it either, but I've seen this several times before. It almost always results in a seized engine, the belt material eventually blocks all oil flow and by the time you get a low oil pressure warning it's too late.

If you have a 6 cylinder BMW that recently needed an accessory/serpentine belt, it's worth it to pull the pan and check the pickup tube (the oil pan gasket is probably leaking anyway). Doing so might save you from replacing your engine.

This 2011 Audi A4 came in leaking all kinds of fluids. Oil leaking from the cam girdle and from the upper timing cover, coolant leaking from a cracked water pump housing. So we resealed the cam girdle, replaced the upper timing cover gasket, and upgraded the water pump from plastic to aluminum, so it doesn't break again.

These are common issues for this era of Audi 2.0L engine. We have a lot of experience with these engines, so we were able to get it repaired and back on the road quickly with no headaches for our customer. If that's the kind of service you're looking for with your Audi, give us a call or send us a message!
