Here at the ICRI Metro New York awards dinner, where Surface Design Group was given the Project of the Year award for the Walker Gymnasium rehabilitation project located at Stevens Institute of Technology. The project now has the opportunity to be submitted to the National level organization for their review with ICRI - International Concrete Repair Institute.

Ancora Engineering + Architecture was recognized for our work as the Structural Engineer of Record for the extensive repairs that wrapped up earlier this year.

Kudos to all the other awardees this evening!

Pictured is Greg Moormann, PE, RA, Principal in charge, and Robert Hartley, PE, RA, our Director of Architecture, who led a lot of the construction admin and field adjustment oversight with the group.

Fires are devastating and unpredictable, which certainly continues to be problematic today in old structures.

It’s an unfortunate and unplanned situation, but to mitigate and prioritize public safety is a role that our team regularly gets called upon to help.

Working closely with NYC Department of Buildings issuing an Immediate Emergency Declaration (IED) to take down the building, our office developed a make-safe game plan for the street facade, complete demolition design, and obtained approvals by the agency within 24-hours of being on site.

From there is providing full time PE hands-on oversight to direct all site operations, and continue coordination with New York City Fire Department for continued investigations.

Fornuately this is not too common of a thing, but know that Ancora’s emergency response team is ready and able when needed.

As we roll into the summer months, we've transitioned into our refreshed and updated LOGO!

As a group rooted in NYC heritage, here's a little insight to what went into the update:

The wordmark draws inspiration from the typography found on early 19th-century ferry boats you might see in the NYC harbor. The Combination Mark, viewed from different perspectives, can evoke the silhouette of diagonal braces, the sun setting on 14th street, and the iconic street cone. The design's overall aesthetic and weight can be described as having the structural integrity of Brutalism with the sophistication of Art Deco.

While this is no “new” news, this photo is quite fascinating on the methods utilized at the time which are still extensively used in practices today.

So what is this? Known as the Truman Reconstruction, back in 1949 to 1952 the White House underwent an entire interior gut demolition due to significant structural damages and deficiencies found throughout (old heavy timber framing that was just on its last legs). The outer shell, a stone clad and red brick masonry backup bearing wall was left to remain while temporarily braced with steel towers and horizontal walers tied thru window openings to “grab” the wall.

Very similar style to today’s masonry interior demo’s or alterations for plenty of NYC buildings.

The cellar levels were also further excavated to accommodate more subterranean rooms and passages, triggering performing underpinning along the outer masonry facade shell (you can see the jacking pockets all formed out for load transfer and settlement control).

At least the use of proper PPE has been an improvement though over time (noting the lack of hard hat on the worker operating the bull dozer).
