January 21, 2025
Dear Brothers, Sisters and Kin,

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Jerry Gort, a third-generation member and a retired member of Local One for 69 years. He peacefully passed away on January 18, 2025, in West Hills, California. Brother Jerry was born on January 2, 1933, and became a member of Local One on November 1, 1956.
He was married to his high school sweetheart, Joan Stephanie Gort, for 47 years until her passing in 1996. Together, they had six children, twelve grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

Jerry began his career as an apprentice at the Century Electric Shop before moving on to work at CBS Studios during the golden age of television. It was at The Garry Moore Show where he made his on-air debut during a holiday season episode that celebrated the backstage crew during the show's end credits. He brought his talents to such shows as What's My Line, The Carol Burnett Show, and The Jackie Gleason Show.

Some of his fondest memories are from working on The Ed Sullivan Show, especially during the night of February 9, 1964. On this famed night, The Beatles were introduced to the American television audience, where backstage, Jerry lifted up Ringo Starr so he could sign the top of the scenic traveling wall before running onstage to play the drums.

As his career progressed, he became the road propman for the New York City Opera. Eventually, he was promoted to Property Master for the venue previously known as The New York State Theater until his retirement in 1991.
As an active family man, Jerry was involved in the Little League, the Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts. Jerry would have his kids "rehearse" setting up their tent in the backyard in preparation for their cross-country family camping trips.
In retirement, Jerry and Joan moved to warm, sunny California, where they preferred to "Shake and Bake" in the desert earthquakes rather than "Freeze and Sneeze" in the seasonal cold of New York.
From there they hosted their family and traveled the world on numerous adventures until her untimely passing in 1996.
In time Jerry was able to find renewed joy and happiness with the 2nd love of his life, Sheilah Hart. They spent their remaining years together on cruise ships, world tours, and visiting all seven continents. With his longtime West Coast cohorts and friends, his true passion was in hosting and playing poker a minimum of 3 days a week.

Jerry is predeceased by his wife, Joan; his children, Bruce, Abraham, and Debby; his granddaughters, Lacie Anne and Rebecca; and his siblings, Gabriella, Ruth, Renee, and George.
Jerry is survived by his longtime partner, Sheilah Hart. His daughter Sarajane Feinsilver (Robert), sons Gary & Leo, both 4th Generation Local One brothers and son in-law Richard Mewbourne. His grandchildren Richelle Nelson (Michael), 5th generation Local One brother Robert Gort (Erin), 5th generation Local One brother Jeffrey Feinsilver, Cyndie Orlando (Matthew), Lisa Marie Destefano, Lesley Feinsilver, Samantha Graham (Sean), Larrisa Mewbourne, Jessika Acosta (Donavin) and Seth Gort. His great grandchildren Braylen, Oscar, Hunter, Sydney, Lauren, Alex, Emily, Sienna, Giavanna, Arla and Lola. Additionally, he is survived by his brother and retired 3rd generation Local One brother, Ronald Gort.

Dear Brothers, Sisters, and Kin,

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our Brother, Michael Allan “MVP” Van Praagh, who died on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at his home in Whitestone, surrounded by family and friends during his final days.

Brother Michael was born on December 18, 1954, and joined Local One on October 26, 1980. He was a third-generation stagehand, the son of Brother Allan Van Praagh and his mother, Regina. Throughout his career, Michael was a dedicated member of IATSE Local One, working within its jurisdiction for over 50 years.

Brother Michael was the Head Carpenter for the Shubert Organization, where he worked at the Royale and Jacobs Theaters. He was known for his unwavering dedication to Local One.

Everyone who encountered him felt his vitality. He always wore a smile and willingly completed favors without hesitation. A dedicated individual, he consistently put the needs of others above his own.

After retiring, Brother Michael discovered his love for travel and embarked on a road trip across the country, which he affectionately named his “Peace and Serenity Tour.”

Above all, he was a devoted family man. He proudly shared stories about his children's accomplishments and enjoyed family meals with his sons nearly every night.

Loved ones joke about Michael’s ability to walk around Times Square and his habit of starting an hour-long conversation with any acquaintance he passed, no matter how close they were.

His compassionate spirit was felt from the streets of Manhattan to the towns of Long Island and everywhere in between.

Michael is survived by his three loving children, Carl, Michael Jr., and Matthew; two siblings, Maura and James; and three grandchildren, Ryden, Canon, and Caleb.

He will be remembered for his vibrant personality, lively sense of humor, and exceptional selflessness, which he demonstrated through his volunteer work at the soup kitchen and his delivery of meals to homebound seniors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brothers, Sisters, and Kin,

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our retired 58-year member, Brother Stephen S. Diaz, from Malverne, NY. He passed away peacefully on January 6, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Brother Steve was born on August 23, 1934, and was initiated into Local One on December 18, 1966. He was the eldest of eight children born to Sebastian Diaz and Nora Grace (Smith) Diaz.
Brother Steve was married to Antoinette DeVito, the love of his life, for over 65 years before her passing in 2020. Together, they raised a beautiful family.
In the early 1960s, he began a long and distinguished career as a stagehand at the Metropolitan Opera House. He served as Master Carpenter for 23 years before retiring in 1997.
Although he could be intimidating to work for, Steve treated everyone equally and remained true to himself, whether speaking with a top performer or a brand-new hire. Many of the men who served as assistants under Steve became leaders in the theatrical industry. Just as Helen of Troy is said to have launched a thousand ships, Brother Steve helped launch 1000 stagehand careers.
He is predeceased by his wife, Antoinette; daughter, Carol Ann Jewels; granddaughter, Melissa Jewels; and brothers, Local One Brother Paul and Albert Diaz.
He is survived by his sons, Stephen A. Diaz and his wife Susan and Anthony Diaz and his wife Denise, and his daughter, Lisa Ryan and her husband James. He leaves behind six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Additionally, he is survived by his sisters, Elaine Pressing and Catherine Horton, as well as his Local One Brothers, Edward, Robert, and John Diaz.
Visitation: January 9 from 2 -4 pm and 7-9 pm.
