Part 2 – The Digital Age has produced a new type of home contractor – The Tech Contractor
When your tap water is dirty, you call a plumber. When your power is giving you problems, you call an electrician. But when your Home Tech or WiFi has problems, who do you call?
American homes are currently getting ‘Smarter’. Whether it is Nest Thermometers, smart lights, robot vacuum cleaners, smart doorbells, or a multitude of other technology products, these all generally work when installed. But like all things electronic, and particularly wireless products, they require maintenance and sometimes repairs, updates, or replacements to keep the whole eco-system working.
Often, the actual product itself may not be the issue, but another part of the eco-system has failed. When you get support for that particular product via call-centers or even warranty replacement, the company will tell you the product is working fine, which it is. The issue sometimes is in another product or system.
A simple example of this is a smart doorbell. This requires a good WiFi signal outside your front door to work properly. When first installed, you had one WiFi provider where your WiFi hardware was in one location, but when you changed providers, it moved and now there is no WiFi at your front door area - hence the doorbell does not work. You can fix or swap the doorbell as much as you want, but that is not the core issue.
One of our clients purchased a smart garage door opener from a great brand off the internet, but it refused to work. The actual product was fine, but who normally has WiFi in their garage??? (I do!)
There are also plenty of issues that do not arise from bad WiFi. Several clients have mixed their Ring/Nest/Eufy smart devices around their house and there are a lot of incompatibility issues between brands as the technology develops. We have assisted numerous clients with platforms like Google Home or others to coordinate all the technology in their households and also set up the automation routines that make all this smart tech worth it.
A great example of this is a client who has an ADT Home Security System and LIFX smart lights. The client had the smart lights all set up to turn on based on time of day and when they were using various rooms but did not know that their ADT system AND LIFX system were compatible with Google Home as well. This allowed us to use the Motion Sensors from the ADT Security System to monitor when someone was in the room and turn the LIFX lights on automatically, a far better system than trying to time when people are in various rooms!
When something breaks or stops working optimally, rather than stop using that product or service, your tech contractor can come to your house, analyze the problem, and like any good plumber, electrician or other contractor, FIX THE PROBLEM!
