More than 3,000 feet underground, there is no outside air to fall back on.At the beginning of the 20th century, Dräger developed one of the first reliable closed-circuit breathing apparatuses for mine rescue. The equipment allowed rescuers to carry breathable air into mines after fires, explosions and dangerous gas releases.In the United States and Canada, these rescuers became known simply as “Draegermen.” The name became so closely associated with mine rescue that it eventually found its way into dictionaries.Their reputation reached beyond the mines and into popular culture. In one of his earliest comic-book stories, Superman went underground to help miners trapped after a collapse — and the Draegermen came to his aid.Their appearance reflected something real: by then, North American mine rescuers using Dräger breathing equipment were so widely recognized that “Draegerman” had become another name for the profession itself.When everything depends on the air you carry, the equipment becomes part of your identity.

Before SCBA, there was the smoke helmet. Dräger’s American story begins in 1907 when the Draeger Oxygen Apparatus Co. opened at 11 Broadway in New York — Dräger’s first subsidiary outside Germany. As Dräger expanded in the United States, its breathing equipment became part of fire-service history in major metro departments, including Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and New York. Firefighters used Dräger smoke helmets and early respiratory-protection equipment to enter heavy smoke, search dangerous structures and rescue people when ordinary breathing was impossible. The equipment has changed dramatically since those early days. The mission has not: Make the next breath dependable when the surrounding atmosphere isn’t.
