Tony Mertens

Tony Mertens I'm a metal artist/blacksmith working with various types of metals such as copper, aluminum, mild steel, and stainless steel.

My work ranges from custom railings to sculptural pieces. I have been working in the metal industry for about 40 years. My full time job involves erecting structural steel as well as stairs and ornamental railings. This background has evolved into an interest in pursuing the artistic side of building with steel. My commercial background is evident in my artistic work in that my pieces are built he

avy and structurally sound. My work includes functional items such as railings, pot racks, and window grids, as well as sculpture work. I incorporate fabrication techniques as well as blacksmithing. Due to my farming background much of my work is influenced by nature. I’m intrigued by trying to mimic the things around me knowing I can come close but never truly copy. I like to use different types of finishes such as colorful patinas and gilders paste. I prefer to stay away from the typical paints.

The client had a table top created by Basin and Burl Woodworking and wanted something a little different for the base. She told me “something viney.“. This is what we came up with. Each leaf was cut out on a bandsaw and shaped to give “life.” The acorns were forged hot with a die under the power hammer as were the branches. There are videos further down my page showing how I form the leaves. The videos show different leaves but the process is similar.

This is an addition to a project from last summer. We used a cable railing in one area to match an existing one at a lower elevation and to provide a less obstructed view of the lake.
