How Do You Reduce the Downtime Impacts of Pump Replacement?

Plan Replacements Before Failure Occurs
Replacing a pump during a scheduled maintenance window is almost always less disruptive than responding to an unexpected breakdown.

Select the Correct Replacement Pump
A pump that matches the system's flow, pressure, and operating requirements can often be installed more efficiently and reach full performance faster.

Conduct a Site Assessment Before Installation
Reviewing piping configurations, electrical requirements, foundations, controls, and system conditions before installation helps identify potential issues that could delay the replacement process.

Are Your Stormwater Pumps Ready for Hurricane Season?

Now is the time for municipalities along the shoreline to evaluate the condition of their stormwater pumps. Here’s why it’s so important:

- Catching minor mechanical or electrical wear early can prevent total pump station failure.

- Routine pump evaluations earn points under FEMA’s Community Rating System, preserving flood insurance premium discounts for local residents.

Northeast Pumps (NEP) provides equipment evaluation, field service and repairs and preventative maintenance of vertical line shaft pumps used in flood control. We also provide sales of new pump equipment through our supplier MWI, a world leader in flood control and stormwater pumps. Reach out to discuss.

What is the Typical Energy Savings of New Pumps and Motors?

Pumping systems are among the largest consumers of energy in municipal, commercial, and industrial facilities. Replacing an aging pump and or motor with modern equipment can significantly reduce operating costs while improving reliability and performance.

New pumps and motors can result in a 20% to 50% energy savings. And variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) are a key technology in newer equipment that contributes to that efficiency.

Proper pump selection and system sizing can help you optimize the efficiency.

NEP can help you evaluate your equipment. Please reach out to discuss.

Gradual pump and motor efficiency and performance loss is typically not cause for alarm. Standard decline is often manageable with routine service or part replacement. There are a few red flags, however, that can indicate attention is required. Some include:
- Sudden or Accelerating Decline
- Flow Rate & Pressure Outside Normal Operating Levels
- Out of Character Sounds and Vibrations
When these issues occur, it’s typically time to call in the professionals. NEP can help you evaluate your equipment.

How Do You Know When to Repair or Replace Pumps & Motors?

It typically comes down to performance, age, and operational impact. Here’s what to consider…

Cost Reality
If the repair cost exceeds 50–70% of the replacement cost, replacement is typically the smarter investment.

Evaluate Age & Lifecycle
Motors typically have 10–20 year lifespans depending on duty cycle and environment. Pumps typically have 5–25 years when properly maintained.

Look At Performance Decline
Chronic inefficiency is a strong signal that replacement may be needed.

Frequency of Repairs
Frequent breakdowns are typically a red flag. Repeated failures often point to deeper systemic issues.

Northeast Pumps (NEP) recently completed the modernization of a Massachusetts municipal stormwater pump station.

The Challenge
- Two of 3 stormwater pumps not fully operational
- 1970s vintage pumps were no longer made
- Lack of documentation for pump sizing
- Piping and valves in poor condition

The Solution
- Demo & removal of obsolete vintage 1970’s equipment.
- Sourcing of new equipment that meets and exceeds today’s compliance and performance standards.
- Installation of new piping, valves, pump and motor.

The municipality took advantage of the pre-negotiated rates that NEP has in place with the state of MA.

This is phase 1 of 3. We're looking forward to completing the job!
