Safety Saturday — Fire Extinguisher Basics 🧯

Fire emergencies don’t give us time to think — only time to act. That’s why knowing how to properly operate a fire extinguisher is a skill every employee should have, whether you’re in a shop, plant, office, or out on a jobsite. A few seconds of preparation can make all the difference.

Key reminders from this week’s training:
🔥Know your extinguisher type. Not all extinguishers handle all fires. Make sure you’re familiar with the ones in your work area and what they’re designed for.
🔥Remember P.A.S.S. Pull the pin, Aim low, Squeeze the handle, Sweep side to side. Simple steps, but they only work if you stay calm and controlled.
🔥Keep a safe distance. Start several feet back and move in as the fire begins to die down. Never turn your back on a fire — even a small one can reignite.
🔥Report and replace. After any use, even a quick discharge, notify your supervisor so the extinguisher can be inspected and replaced.
🔥When in doubt, get out. If the fire is spreading, producing heavy smoke, or you feel unsafe, evacuate immediately and call for help. No piece of equipment is worth risking your life.

Staying prepared keeps everyone safer.

🚨 SAFETY ALERT — REWARD OFFERED 💲

UPDATE: Violator has been identified! Thank you for your support! Leaving this post out here to create awareness. Just because a road may "look" solid does not mean it has fully cured. There is a cure coat that is applied that makes it look white but does not mean it is solid or drivable. Please heed caution and respect our road blockades.

Yesterday morning, Thursday June 18, on our Highway 34 Paving Project, a gray Chevy pickup pulling a white trailer drove through an active work zone and onto freshly placed concrete. The driver bypassed equipment blocking the roadway, drove around our crew, and continued down the shoulder before getting fully onto the new pavement. This occurred between 204th Trail and 196th St, damaging over 500ft of fresh concrete that will need to be removed and repoured, delaying the project completion.

Below is the statement by our Project Manager that witnessed the event:
"Today we had an incident that we worry about every day. A gray chevy truck pulling a white trailer with a logo on the side drove down to our header where we started paving this morning and drove around men working and equipment parked across the road to keep vehicles from driving on Wet Concrete. He drove off the edge of the 9.5” pavement and proceeded down the dirt shoulder and managed to get one set of wheels on our new pavement driving down to 204th trail when he got the whole vehicle and trailer on the road. He finally turned off to 196th and drove down through the ditch and back on the road and away. We did not get a license plate number but know it was from Lucas County. The driver was a male in his late 50’s early 60’s with a gray beard. We believe it was a ½ ton gray Chevy with a white trailer. The trailer had a large logo on the side, but we did not make out the company."

🛑We’re sharing this today as a reminder:
Work zones are not optional. Barriers are not suggestions. Our crews’ safety comes first. Incidents like this put our employees’ lives at risk. Our crews deserve to go home safely every day, and we will not tolerate reckless behavior in our work zones.

💲We are offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to identifying the driver.
