The Needham History Center Acquires the Iconic HARVEY'S HARDWARE Sign!

Harvey's is - alas! - now a part of Needham's history. As the new owners prepare to take over the site, the sign that has graced the corner of Great Plain Avenue and Chestnut Street for decades had to come down. Jeff and Gary Katz, sons of the late Harvey Katz, kindly donated the sign to the Needham History Center. At 15 feet long, moving it was a challenge, but it is now safely at the Mills House. We are thrilled to add it to our collections, and thank Jeff and Gary for entrusting it to us.

Thank you for the outpouring of support and words of encouragement over this past year.

After almost 70 years in business, we have made the difficult decision to close Harvey’s Hardware.

This announcement comes with mixed emotions – we are so proud of the business that we’ve built in the Needham community, and are thankful for the terrific customers and the great friendships we’ve made along the way. As much as we will miss our store and our daily interactions with you all, we know this is the right time to enter our next chapter.

When our dad Harvey opened Harvey’s Hardware in 1953, he couldn’t have hoped for anything more – having a thriving business in the town that he called home, working side by side with his family (including each of his 7 grandchildren) and long-time employees who became like family. You all brought our father so much joy and purpose, and we can only hope that Harvey’s legacy lives on in this community for years to come.

Thank you to all of our loyal customers who have supported us over the years. It’s been quite a ride!

Update 5/18/2022: We have seen the many questions and comments on social media regarding the status of our store, so we wanted to take a moment to give everyone an update.

But first, we would like to thank everyone for your heartwarming condolences following the passing of our dad, Harvey (https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/bostonglobe/name/harvey-katz-obituary?id=34218366). We read each and every comment posted about Harvey on Facebook, and the stories you shared about your interactions with him and the impact he had in this community has meant so much to us. Thank you all for sharing and for your kind words!

Next, we would like to address the many rumors going around about the status of our store. It is our intention to RE-OPEN Harvey's Hardware, though unfortunately we are facing many obstacles in our attempt to do so. Once all the damaged inventory was removed from our shelves, it was quite apparent that in order to re-stock, we would have to replace the existing shelving fixtures first. This is where the current delay lies. The supply chain issue that everyone is talking about these days is impacting the delivery of new fixtures. Finding "used" fixtures that are in good shape and suitable for our needs is not easy, either.

So, long story short, we are working on it - and in the meantime, all of our long-time employees that you all know and love (Mike O'D, Mike O'C, Dane, Steve and Walter) are still with us and are a key part of our reorganization efforts.

While we continue to work through these roadblocks in our attempt to formally re-open, we are still operating in the following limited capacity:

-Our Mobile Locksmith and Home Services department is still up and running
-Grills - we are able to supply you with special order Weber, Traeger, and Big Green Egg grills, including assembly and delivery
-Propane tanks - we are able to swap out your empty propane tanks for full ones and we are also selling brand new tanks filled

Update March 27th: Our electricity has finally been restored, so with the power back on and the generator gone we are now able to begin the next phase of removing all inventory, cleaning up the store and restocking with new merchandise. Unfortunately this means we are not quite ready to open our doors at this time, but we will keep you posted.

In the meantime, our mobile locksmith and home services department is still operating, and we are also able to supply you with special order Weber gas grills (including assembly and delivery). Please call us at 781-444-4637 or email [email protected].

Update March 2nd: We are as anxious as you are to re-open our doors! Unfortunately, we are still waiting for the electrical repair to be completed as well as the replacement of inventory.
