Rooted in history. Driven by legacy.
In 1942, the U.S. government established the City of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, known as the “Secret City” for its role in the Manhattan Project during World War II. Just one year later, in 1943, Oak Ridge Hospital was built to support the residents of this once-closed community.
At the time, coal was the most accessible fuel source, and the hospital operated coal-fired boilers managed by dedicated operators. When the city opened to the public in 1949, the hospital continued to serve the community, and in 1959, its original coal boilers were replaced with three Cleaver-Brooks firetube boilers.
Decades later, those same boilers are still in operation, a testament to quality equipment and consistent maintenance.
Recently, the facility was faced with a decision: reduce emissions or replace the boilers due to uncontrolled NOx levels. After working closely with the boiler inspector and Boiler Supply, and evaluating the excellent condition of the existing equipment, a different path was chosen.
Instead of replacement, we upgraded the system with new controls and a front head to bring emissions in line with today’s standards while preserving the integrity of the original installation.
This project is a perfect example of honoring the past while meeting the demands of the present. As a company founded in 1942, we take pride in supporting systems that have stood the test of time and helping them continue to perform for generations to come.
Proud to partner with a great customer on a job well done.
