This weekend was all the SCCA RallyCross fun at the Southern Sweet Tea Classic Southeast Division SCCA RallyCross with the Tennesee Valley Region SCCA - TVRSCCA. The organizers, as always, did a fabulous job. And there is something special about a 2-day event. It's like a family reunion, but the family you chose. Eight seasons in and these relationships have oh so much value.
I had two renters, so they ran in Stock AWD and I moved myself to Mod AWD. Since I was not running in my class I decided that I was going to focus on two things, 1) looking ahead and trusting to get faster while looking ahead, 2) turning sooner and trusting the fast after the turn. My times reflect that and my final lap was, for me, a complete success.
It has been extremely frustrating to love something so much and just not really be all that good at it. This is my eighth season and my times do not reflect the amount of seat time I have spent. But I love it so much and so I shall continue to work at gaining skills. I am a much better driver than I was in 2019. My moves are more intentional and thoughtful. I can now assess a lap, identify where to change, and find another second. I have much more control over my car and have made moves to be responsive rather than reactive.
Here's the thing, I don't do RallyCross for the trophy, I do it for the sheer joy of grassroots motorsports and the community. What I lack in speed I make up for with exuberance engagement and, with full eye contact, convincing people to give this a try. I lead the novice track walk and work to identify newbies so that everyone who shows up at our track knows that they belong.
I am not the type of person to halfway anything, but when I decided to go all in with RallyCross, it was more than just attending every event. It was a decision to full on invest in and help grow a community that is safe, supportive, welcoming, and just the best damn time ever.
So, I will continue to work hard to improve my times and maybe one day I will be the person to catch, until then and if then, embracing the process and the community is where it's at.
I do RallyCross and think you should too :)
