A paper highlighting the application of AI-driven process control was featured in the March 2025 issue of TAPPI Journal. This paper illustrates the typical advantages pulp and paper producers experience from predictive, self-learning AI models. By proactively addressing potential problems, our customers enjoy more stable operations and lower chemical application costs. Please contact us if you are interested in a presentation to discuss potential applications.

If you attend TAPPICON 24 in Cleveland, please attend our paper on Monday, April 29 at 3:30 pm. HABER and Pruszynski Paper Chemistry Consulting, LLC will discuss the benefits of the application of AI in controlling processes in papermaking. An example of optimization of wet strength development will be discussed, but technology can be applied to any productivity or quality issues. I have been interested in wet end chemistry and quality optimization for more than 30 years, and can see how an application of AI enables use of vast amounts of process data in the predictive mode.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact us directly.

The joint paper with Arakawa Chemical and Westrock R&D was published in the January 2024 issue of the TAPPI Journal. This paper discusses the amphoteric dry strength technology and its unique fit to Asian highly closed mill water systems (high conductivity) and poor quality recycled fiber. The optimization of Arakawa technology in terms of molecular weight and distribution, charge level and the ratio of anionic and cationic charges, and blocky distribution of charges, differentiates it from other amphoteric products on the market.
With the water closure trends in North America and the deterioration of fiber quality, experiences from the Asian market will become relevant here.

The dry strength properties of paper and board products are crucial to their performance. Variety of dry strength tests are at the top of the quality specifications of each board and packaging grade. The fiber-fiber bonding characteristics affect the paper products' strength. For strength developed from fiber selection and its mechanical development through refining, papermaker can increase strength further by applying dry strength agents - typically various starches or synthetic dry-strength polymers..

The performance of cationic dry-strength products is highly affected by increased levels of contamination associated with increased mill water circuit closure. Amphoteric additives with their multiple adsorption options and higher resistance to increase conductivity levels are more robust in highly closed mills and using poor quality recycled fibers.

Visit our website to learn more about unique properties of unique ARAKAWA amphoteric dry strength technology. We are available to discuss its technical basis, development history, application and performance.

The two-part Tappi Journal publication addressing the water chemistry challenges in paper and board production was recently published. This was a joint effort with Dr. Peter HART and Dr. Lebo XU from WESTROCK R&D. I want to thank Peter and Lebo for excellent cooperation on these papers. Please visit the website of my company to read these papers.

Strength is a key quality challenge in recycled board and packaging grades. With the decreasing quality of the recycled raw material and increasingly closed water circuits, reaching strength specifications becomes more difficult.

During TAPPICon23 in Atlanta a joint paper with Westrock and ARAKAWA, the 4th generation amphoteric polyacrylamide dry strength technology was presented. This technology has a dominant position in Japan and other Asian countries, due to there low raw material quality, and difficult water conditions. These two trends are becoming very relevant for North American industry. Can we learn something from the experiences of Asian markets?

If you are interested in the paper or want to discuss the technology, please contact me.
