In a report released last month, the Commonwealth of Kentucky was estimated to have 391 million tons of recoverable coal reserves, with 147 million tons in the Eastern Coalfield and 243 million tons in the Western Coalfield.

Recoverable reserves are the quantity of coal that can be extracted from existing reserves at current mines.

With one fifth of all US coal mines located in Kentucky, coal remains a cornerstone of Kentucky’s economy.
