Check out the construction of the Twin Arch Viaduct around 1900.

Since 1837, trains passing over Parr's Ridge passed over the relatively steep grade through Mount Airy. In the late 1800s, the B&O Railroad set out to lower this grade.

The new right-of-way included construction of the Twin Arch Viaduct and the Ridgeville Tunnel. When completed in 1902, the Parr's Ridge grade was cut down from 1.6 to 0.85 and the trip over Parr's Ridge was shortened by 1.6 miles. The new route passed and still passes under Ridgeville.

75 years ago machining looked very different. This steel part was manually turned on a lathe and slotted on a mill, by the late William (Granksy) F. Alexander Sr. Also pictured here is the tool box he used in the 1950s.
The tool box, along with this part, sits in our entrance here at Phase; which is now run by the 3rd generation of Alexander machinists. Phase also employs a few of the 4th generation and enjoys frequent visits from the 5th.

If you know us here at Phase, you know we love a good prank. This one was one for the history books. Our friends over at Arrow Design LLC had an explosible dust collector sitting in their lot waiting to be installed. We saw a blank canvas. The amazing .bliiink helped our idea come to life.

Even with all the new technology and automation today, manual machines still have an important role in our shop. Here a machinist uses a Bridgeport milling machine to fabricate a fixture needed to hold small parts in place to finish them
