These pipe columns require a full pe*******on weld at the base plate. Base plate is 1.5 inches thick and the pipe is 24 feet long. Welded with 1/16” Select Arc 720, 100% CO2, at about 300ipm. Maintained a 5g position by rolling the pipe with one hand and welding with the other hand.

Follow along Zach Vizgaudis’ journey as a structural welder. This is where I work and where you can watch me weld some of the biggest welds on the west coast.

A couple weeks ago I started welding this staircase. All of the welds have been ultrasound tested and passed with zero flaws. Now the detailers will prep it for paint and send it in to the next room.

Currently I’m working on some relatively small columns with XL gaps on the weld joints. But, just like I tell our fitters, “idgaf about a gap”.

I started welding another giant staircase today. I put my 25 foot tape measure on it to show the size. The first step is to weld the stringers which will act as the frame that goes along the sides of the stairs. Each spot where the stringers change angles, has 3 full pe*******on welds. It took me 8 hours to weld these two stringers.

Welding some more stairs at work. This one is about 30 feet long and 6 feet wide. These stairs took me about 12 hours to complete and I did two of them. The crazy thing is, these stairs need to be dipped in a hot galvanizer tank when I’m done with them.

Here is a roof access ladder I welded at work. It’s 30 something feet tall and took me 14 hours to complete.
