Encoder errors from the Z axis on boot-up turned out to be a major crash. The machine is a CTX Beta 800, built in 2009.
Opening the machine showed the Z-axis ballscrew pushed inside the Z-axis motor. The motor was trashed.
The ballscrew had to be cut in half to get the parts out. New parts were ordered and installed.

A nameplate is the most honest part of a machine.
Seven of them, 2002 to 2023, from machines we've had our hands on. Watch the top line: Gildemeister, then DMG | Gildemeister, then DMG MORI. Now read the bottom lines: Bielefeld. Pfronten. Seebach.
The name on top kept changing. The factories didn't.
Most people look at the badge on the door. The plate tells you more: which plant built it, in what year, to which electrical spec. Fifteen years later, when something fails, that's the information that matters.
