Restoring some old railings and getting them up to modern safety code that a client found, these are destined for a future wedding barn loft, and will feature some old live edge or lumber for a top drink rail. (depending on the route the client and I choose aesthetically) Restoring old steel isn't always my first choice or favorite thing to do, but the experience and challenges brought with working with old steel are always welcomed. Can't wait to finish these up this week and see what a tinted wax finish will look like on the patina and weathered steel. (The white residue is phosphoric acid that converts the rust into iron phosphate halting the progression of more iron oxide/rusting)

From Markings on paper, to Metal. It's like it's in the name or something. The past few weeks certainly flew by in the shop. Wrapping up the first big projects of the spring feels pretty good. Stay tuned for the install pictures later this week!

Fun little side project from today up for sale, some hand forged hooks I made a while ago. Now this lovely coat rack needs a new home, also a perfect last minute Christmas gift. Mounting holes will be drilled to fit where ever this piece ends up living.

Had some extra fuel to burn in the forge today while working on another project. Nifty little bottle opener from an old railroad spike. If anyone is interested in something similar I have many more railroad spikes. I can make batches of hooks, personalised accessories, individual heavy wall hangers, Swirly dirrly wirlies The possibilities are endless...

Concrete is getting poured next week, then assembly of the building can begin! Pretty soon MK II METAL and SDSmith Carpentry (Scott/Dewey AKA My Pop) will be going brick and mortar. This has been ongoing most of the summer, putting our time in when we can to get'er done. Seeing the end of the tunnel is very relieving to say the least.

When we are completed I will be giving a shout out to all the help from everyone we've had along the way. I was also thinking about hosting a little grand opening shop open house/party to give a chance for people to come up and check out the services and products I hope to be able to bring to our town and greater community as a whole.

It has been amazing to be able to take advantage of this opportunity. Without the help of a few people namely My Mom Tosca Smith and Pop Scott Smith, none of this would be even remotely possible. Had it not been for their parenting, support, or push they gave me to just strive for the goals I wished to achieve. I would also like to Mention my Uncle and Grandfather, thank you for the Two years you put up with me as an apprentice, and everything they managed to teach me in that short time. As well as all the tools and equipment from him and my grandfather they will be getting put to good use.

There was excellent weather today despite the forecast. Between building the new shop and other summer projects I finally had time to get this job wrapped up. Going to a client's with this staircase tonight! I'm super excited to wrap up this project. The geometry was a bit of a challenge, but it's all together and will go nicely with the handrail that now accompanies their porch.
