This Memorial Day, we honor the generations of Americans who gave their lives to protect our nation and its freedoms. As our country marks 250 years—and as BPMI celebrates 70—we’re reminded that our work carries a profound responsibility. Every component we support and every challenge we solve helps bring home our Sailors home safely. Individually our efforts may seem small, but together, as One Team, they make a lasting impact.

Today and always, we remember the fallen with gratitude and remain steadfast in our mission to bring our service members home safely. ❤️ 🤍 💙

This month, we’re celebrating two trailblazing “firsts” in Naval history that helped shape the fleet we support today:

🚀 First carrier-qualified jet squadron

On May 5, 1948, Fighter Squadron 17A (VF-17A) became the first carrier-qualified jet squadron in the U.S. Navy.

After years of innovation following the Navy’s 1942 push for jet aircraft, 16 FH 1 Phantoms embarked aboard the light carrier Saipan (CVL 48) to prove jets could launch and recover at sea.
With every pilot qualifying and 200 total landings—and only a minor mishap—VF 17A earned its place in history and paved the way for the jet fighter squadrons that operate from our nuclear-powered aircraft carriers today.

🌊 First submerged circumnavigation of the globe

On February 16, 1960, USS Triton (SSRN 586) got underway on a mission to circle the globe entirely submerged on nuclear power.

Crossing the official starting point in the mid-Atlantic on February 24 and returning there on April 25, TRITON covered 26,773 nautical miles in 60 days and 21 hours.

When she arrived in Groton, Connecticut on May 10, 1960, USS TRITON was recognized as the first ship to circumnavigate the globe while submerged—a landmark achievement proving submarines could operate safely, stealthily, and effectively around the world.

At BPMI, we are proud to support today’s U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and submarines as they carry forward this legacy—protecting our nation’s security from the sea and from the sky.

When you work at BPMI, you quickly see how our work evolves to meet the needs of the U.S. Navy. That’s why we rely on people and teams who are agile problem-solvers with a true “can‑do” mindset—ready to tackle real‑world challenges, even when they extend beyond our usual areas of expertise. When we are called upon, we deliver.

📸 The team pictured did exactly that. Through their efforts, we were able to evaluate, analyze and help the Navy resolve a complex technical issue.

While we don’t have the room to share the technical details, we can celebrate the people behind the achievement. Their creativity, teamwork, and dedication are what move our mission forward every day.

👏 Bravo Zulu to this outstanding team—your impact matters, and we’re proud of you.

🙂Proud doesn't begin to describe our feelings about being named a 2026 Top Workplace by the Times Union.

Our headquarters may be in southwestern Pennsylvania, but of equal importance are the talented BPMI employees who report to work daily to our Schenectady, New York, office. They live the values that permeate our company to promote a culture built on integrity, innovation, diversity, and excellence.

👏This recognition is a direct reflection of them.

We extend a big thank you to the Times Union and Top Workplaces for the honor of being named a 2026 Top Workplace, and an even bigger thank you to our Schenectady employees!

During the commissioning of USS MASSACHUSETTS (SSN 798), something historic happened in Boston Harbor: the U.S. Navy’s oldest commissioned warship, USS CONSTITUTION, sailed alongside the Navy’s newest—a state‑of‑the‑art submarine.

The night before the ceremony, several BPMI employees had the rare opportunity to take an in‑depth tour of CONSTITUTION at the Charlestown Navy Yard, where it serves as a living museum.

Connor, an employee who joined both the tour and the commissioning, shared his experience:

“The commissioning of USS MASSACHUSETTS was special for many reasons. SSN 798 appears to be the first submarine—and the first nuclear‑powered vessel—to ever dock in Boston Harbor. Even more meaningful was having USS CONSTITUTION, the oldest commissioned ship in the fleet, officially welcome her. Watching CONSTITUTION fire a salute from the water behind MASSACHUSETTS is a moment I’ll never forget.

It’s always rewarding to see the hard work of BPMI and the entire industrial base come to life in a completed warship entering the fleet. I wish the crew of MASSACHUSETTS the best—may they always be Wicked Stealthy!”

Big moment in Boston Harbor!

The fast‑attack submarine USS MASSACHUSETTS (SSN 798) was officially commissioned on March 28 — and several BPMI employees were there to witness this incredible milestone.

A commissioning ceremony marks the start of a ship’s active service in the U.S. Navy, bringing together crew members and their families, Navy personnel, government officials, honored guests, and the public.

BPMI engineer, Melissa, shared her experience:

“I’ve worked at BPMI for almost 39 years, and attending a commissioning was on my work bucket list. Hearing the ship’s sponsor, Sheryl Sandberg, say ‘man our ship and bring her to life,’ and watching the Sailors board was deeply moving — it brought tears to my eyes. It truly highlighted the BPMI mission and our role in the NNPP.”

A proud moment for the Navy — and for all of us supporting the mission. ⚓️💙
