When you’re faced with a multiyear, multimillion dollar concrete renovation project, consider hydrodemolition.

That’s what Conterra Restoration did for a parking garage job in Toronto. Hydrodemolition provided them an efficient, ecofriendly solution, removing about 200,000 square feet (18,580 square meters). The crew used our EcoClear water treatment system to treat about 10 million gallons (37.9 million liters) of water.

During an eight-hour shift, the crew removed 600 to 1,000 square feet (55.7 to 92.9 square meters) of concrete. Had they opted for manual removal, they estimated it would take a crew of 20 to achieve the same productivity for removal only.

A common question we hear is, “When should hydrodemolition be used?”

Hydrodemolition should be used when concrete needs to be removed while preserving the surrounding structure. This includes removing damaged or deteriorated material, as well as fixing incorrectly placed concrete or modifying existing structures.

Hydrodemolition is especially effective where structural integrity, bond strength and long-term durability are crucial, such as tunnels, bridges and other infrastructure.

The challenge: Remove about 22,000 square feet of fire-damaged concrete at a depth of 2.5 inches on the underside of a fire-damaged bridge in Los Angeles.

The equipment: Aqua Cutter 750V, two high-pressure pumps.

The results: 100 square feet of concrete removed per hour, keeping rebar intact and providing a superior bonding surface to replace the old concrete.

How did they do it? Extreme Pressure Systems, Inc. used the Aqua Cutter's tower to reach 21 feet to the bridge underside. Dealing with challenging angles, the crew used the 750V's shape function to cut in a polygon shape, rather than relying on manual removal.

When Groupe MGC needed to create trenches for new drainpipes in an industrial building basement in Montreal, they turned to Aquajet.

The crew had limited space to work with and needed to keep the rebar intact. Furthermore, the concrete slab couldn’t be damaged because of water pressure from the ground water beneath the building. Given the requirements, Groupe MGC turned to the Aquajet Ergo.

Using the Ergo, they removed 20 cubic meters of concrete at a depth of 2 feet over 22 days. Congratulations to Groupe MGC on a job well done!

Concrete errors cause problems for project timetables and budgets. Did you know that hydrodemolition can fix these issues so you don’t have to demolish everything and start over?

Example: A contractor experienced formwork shift on an overpass project. They needed to remove part of the deck and abutment and repour to correct the shift. Using hydrodemolition, they completed removal while maintaining structural integrity and preserving rebar.
