Backyard MR2 Parts

Backyard MR2 Parts Purchased my first 88 MR2 in 2005 after selling the world's (at the time) highest horsepower 96 Corvette GrandSport

Small operation just southeast of Charlotte, NC. We've done everything from designing custom body work to full engine rebuilds and swaps. I'm doing some service work now as well as getting on a pile of project cars (most rebuilding to sell, so keep an eye out). I'm I-CAR gold certified with 5 more credit hours than needed for their platinum status. We sell LOTS of used MR2 parts and some other 80's Toyota used parts as well.

As usual, been adding more parts the last few weeks... mostly first gen stuff here lately.

I've been buying and selling on eBay since 1999, got my first MR2 (pictured) in 2005 and fell in love with these things (came from modified Corvettes and Mustangs and stumbled into the MR2). Started working on them for friends almost immediately and buying parts cars, at first to have spare parts, t...

Pretty cool, they price cut by half on the limited to 150 pieces JCCS pin, it was absurdly priced originally to be fair. Other two are limited to 250. When you buy 3 there is a pretty good discount also. I have 3 colors of the Celica Supra, and the red one stays in the back of my driver's seat.

Long post, bear with me if you will.

OK, so I'm not going to throw anyone under the bus here, and I don't want to badmouth anyone, but I want you guys to know something. I got contacted by another parts guy in the MR2 world, a more recent guy to the business, about buying parts from me that he could then UPCHARGE you fine folks for. I've been approached about this before by a guy that is now out of business and has passed away, and just as last time, I'm turning this guy down also, although I'm handling it much nicer than I did last time.

I was rude to the last guy, and after a couple years I felt bad about that, but he was specifically trying to buy high demand items in bulk at a discount to cut me out of making anything basically (which I realized immediately), and that really upset me and I handled it poorly and said some things I shouldn't have and I regret that to this day as it just wasn't the right thing to do, and wasn't how I want to handle myself as a person. As far as I know he died angry with me, holding a grudge, and I have to live with that. My mistake, I certainly let any harsh feelings on my end go well before he passed. He did some really underhanded stuff like buying the web address I used to use for the business after I let it go, thinking I needed it and inadvertently stopped paying for it... I simply found the webpage to be a waste of time and let it die and didn't renew the domain. My words, and how I handled it, apparently sent him down a pretty petty, dark path and for that I'm sorry, and that's totally on me. I caused him to have hatred brewing in his heart for years, and that was my fault for allowing myself to get upset and handle the situation poorly.

That said, I didn't get into this to make a bunch of cash, I got into parting out these cars because I saw a need for the community, in the community I was a part of, and I wanted to sell parts at the best prices I could while being close to going market rate on stuff... I've always, always tried to be the cheapest out there, because not all of us are made of money, especially mk1 folks I've noted over the years. As our cars have risen in price, so have parts car prices, and so have parts prices themselves due to this (and demand increases driving up prices across the board, with a more limited supply now). It is what it is but I still try to be as affordable as possible.

I started this business when I lived alone in a single wide trailer renting from my grandparents at the time, tore my first MR2 down in an open ended shed in the yard using an engine hoist to raise the car off my concrete slab and slid the engine/trans out from under it on a tarp. I worked outside in the cold and in the rain some days. If I didn't have something I NEVER tried to buy it from someone else to upsell you guys to turn a quick buck. In fact, I've often sent folks to OTHER parts guys if I didn't have something, expecting, and receiving nothing in return other than friendship with those guys, and I've made several friends doing just that. I'm not trying to gate keep or pretend I've got more parts than I have. I'm sure I've probably made those guys customers that no longer check with me first, but that is what it is... if I don't have something, I try to help another good seller I trust out and send you their way.

As things have changed with my situation, I got married, we've got a 9 year old son now that this business (and my wife working her job) allows me to work from home so he can do home school (he's on the spectrum, so we just don't think he'd function well in public school frankly)... we had a small house, so four years ago now we moved to a bigger place with less land an hour from my primary shop where I think at least 17 MR2 parts cars are currently along with my other Toyota parts vehicles and my project cars, so I've changed everything over to my ebay store, so I don't waste my time and yours looking for parts I don't have listed and on the shelf, ready to go, in inventory.

At this point I simply don't sell things that aren't pulled or aren't ready for me to find a box to put it in, except on rare occasions when I have something here at the house on a parts car on the car trailer. I test whatever I reasonably can before selling it to you guys, especially if I don't know the background on the cars I've bought and why they got parked. Sometimes I have 4-5 of a GOOD selling part sitting around until I have a car I can test them on, preferably without tearing into one of my own cars to do so... right now I've got the dash out of my own '88 N/A car because I was testing switches a few months back and I'm not driving that car currently so I haven't put it back together, lol.

Point being, I appreciate you guys, some of you, being around for the entire 20 years I've been doing this, I'm thankful for your business, your support, and our mutual love for building, maintaining, and owning MR2s and other old Toyotas. I just wanted to say that, and since it is Thanksgiving, I wanted to tell you fine folks I'm thankful to you and for you... and for your support and business over the years! I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!! - Aaron

Well, I wasn't 100% sure what the current going rate is on one of these, but ebay tells me I'm a few bucks under median sold price, but none have been listed in 90 days so I'm taking their word for it. I found one or two from retailers for a bit more, one with less information about it for a bit less, and this is a known, working, boost producing unit from an unmodified car. This was my "nice" spare, but I've also got one in pieces I could harvest stuff from so I'm letting this one go. I'd consider reasonable offers, but I'm also happy to have this sitting on the shelf.

Gosh, this is why I hate these services that re-ship things overseas from the US. In my case parts. When something gets damaged there is no recourse as a second shipper has then sent the item on, it may have been repackaged, etc. And I just can't know that it wasn't, or how it was treated in the almost month now since it was sold. Super frustrating.

My suggestion, if buying overseas, to just pay the cost to ship it to you from me, then I can know it wasn't opened, repackaged (poorly possibly), or something like that. I love selling to international folks, no issue with that at all, however, this deal using a sub shipper to save some money causes major issues at times. Looking at the picture I can't even tell if that's the same box I shipped the item in, and it has been weeks since that item went out on top of that, so I have no clue where the box has been for nearly a month now, or how it was treated and by whom while it was waiting to be shipped out of country. Really sucks for the buyer. If I ship directly, I can keep up with the package, know it was only handled by the shipping company or local postal services, and it won't be sitting somewhere for weeks in who knows what conditions, and it won't have been repackaged along the way (unless customs opens it, which is frankly rare if I describe the contents well).

1991 Land Cruiser.

She runs, engine seems healthy, oil looked good when drained and replaced, didn't note metal in the oil. I have had her up to 60 driving around out near the shop. It is a bit of a project depending on how nice you want to make it. 314k miles.

Known needs:
Install the brand new power steering pump (already have one, it is included)

Install high pressure power steering line (already have this also)

Center diff lock is gummed up, needs cleaned or replaced (I've read good results on either method).

Otherwise she runs, drives, and stops fine. Power windows and locks and sunroof all work, AC was working but seems to need a charge after sitting unused most of a year here. Driver's window seems to have come off track when I opened it after it sat a few months, but it did roll up and seal. Has a brand new battery. Has 314k miles. Engine does not smoke and runs well. Something in the engine bay rattles when you fire it up, but it isn't the engine, seems to be something loose, maybe a heat shield or underbody shield of some sort? Haven't figured out what it is since it goes away immediately after startup. Not sure when timing belt and water pump were done last. Body is rather clean, you might have a spot or two where the paint has rubbed off and you've got a little minor surface rust, but that's it. Maybe some small dents here and there but nothing that stood out or was notable. Rear driver's side door has clear coat failure (no clue why it was clear coated, Toyota didn't clear their solid colors at this time, none of the rest of the truck seems to have clear). It does seem to have had a CB or some kind of antenna added at one point, there is a hole and a plug in the hole on the roof. Seats have wear commensurate with age of the vehicle. I see one tiny dash crack on the driver's side that should be in the pictures, I'd replace that dern steering wheel for sure, as it is eaten up on the top from wear and tear/age. I was going to put a wood MOMO in it if I kept this thing.

More mk1 parts listed... go forth and buy the things my MR2 peoples. If you need them that is... some of this stuff is frequently requested or the only ones on ebay in a few cases. Non-side skirt rear quarter trim panels, 85-86 ash tray, corner marker lights (all 4 now), dome light, front and rear mud flap pairs, seat belt receivers, steering column surround trim, lower driver's dash panel (black), etc. Facebook changed something and now they don't show the store picture in the link and it says "Security Measure"... I think they're fed up with outside links and are trying to limit them for businesses. Sigh. https://www.ebay.com/str/backyardmr2parts
