Here is part of our procedure for installing a Piston/ Rod assembly in a Race build or freshen.
3 l***s needed.
ARP Ultra-Torque for the bolt threads and under head (steel rod). Driven HVL for bearing surfaces, wrist pins and pin bores. Then Total Seal AL on the rings/ lands and piston shirt.
Next, before installing, wipe down cylinder walls with a clean rag , dampened with ATF… so actually 4.
That may seem like a lot, but there is STRONG reasons for each of them.
Everything has to be right for initial start up on a Race engine. If not, you may get the privilege of doing it again!

When you take a couple hours looking at an LS oil pump, you find things to improve. I'm not talking about the commons, like dimpling, porting entry and discharge and drilling outer rotor for pressurized to OD. Well, that too. But, You find the port walls fall short of the ID of the drive rotor. You find that the standard volume is too big, but the low volume pump is too small. So reduce rotor thickness from .420" to .390". Still bigger than the LV .360". You know....the Goldie Locks thing. Then there is the whole Pick up tube thing. Both for restrictive flow to pump intake and intrusive for oil pan windage control. Not going into what I've found there yet.

Just trying to catch up on things from the year. I forgot to post and brag about my buddy Tom Gillam winning Class at Indy this year. I believe it's his third. He keeps finding ways to make that Z go faster and faster... even with going to "DS" from "ES" designation. Sure I help with some things, but it's all Tom's relentless efforts and resourcefulness that make this thing kick butt!
