Superior Glass Works Closing Our Doors

On January 28, 2017, a fire swept through the Superior Glass Works fiberglass manufacturing facility. Fortunately no one was injured, but the building and all 500 molds used to produce replica and custom fiberglass street rod parts, street rod bodies, and race car bodies were destroyed. Given the 40 years it took to create these molds, and the difficulty in obtaining new originals to make new molds, Superior Glass Works cannot recover from this loss and has closed its operations permanently. This is a loss for the street rod community who relied on the availability of our products as well a personal loss for the owners and employees. We would like to thank our customers who have supported us through the years and used our products to get their dreams on the road.

Our chassis shop, although undamaged, will also be closing and the fixtures and equipment are currently for sale. Please contact me if you are interested.

1933 Chevy Master Chassis All Done! Just finished up another chassis for a local customer with an original steel car. He was moving forward with replacing the interior wood structure used in these early Chevy's and realized his original frame wasn't the solid foundation needed. We put together a solid driver chassis that includes a custom independent front suspension made by our friends at Kugel Komponents. Years ago when we first tooled up for this chassis, we required a special IFS crossmember that allows using the original radiator, radiator support, and fender braces. Superior Glass Works and Kugel worked together to meet these needs. The frame rails are an exact copy of the original , and this one-year-only frame has a very unique 'double-hump' under the trunk. Other options include a torsion-style sway bar on the QA1-sprung Ford 9" rear and posi 3rd member from Dutchman. While most chassis we build have Wilwood discs in the rear, this customer specified drums. Please note that the chassis is pictured as-delivered and completely assembled. We assemble every chassis to make sure every part goes together and there are no missing or incorrect pieces.

Custom BWM Chassis - We just finished a chassis for a very unusual project - a 1939 BMW 328. Our customer will be hand-building a replica body in aluminum and needed a solid foundation on which to start the project. Very little information was available regarding chassis specs, so we put our heads together and decided to start with a 1934 Chevy Standard frame and shorten it 13" to get a 94.5" wheelbase. The Heidt's Mustang II IFS was spec'd for drive-ability, but the rear leafs and drum brakes were chosen to more closely mimic the original. Given the car will weight about 1900 pounds, we used 150 # Suzuki Samurai leaf springs which can be lowered and softened as needed by removing leafs. The knock-off wheels are a nice touch! Seems like our work was the easy part as he's got a lot of hammer-work ahead of him.

1934-35 Chevy Standard Chassis out the door! Built to go under an original steel body, this chassis is outfitted with all the goodies to make a nice street rod driver. Front suspension is a Heidts Mustang II while out back it has QA1 coil-overs suspending a Dutchman Motorsports Ford 9". As with all our builds, we worked with the customer to size the rear-end correctly for his wheels and tires. Motor mounts are for a Chevy LS and we also installed a fuel tank with in-tank pump, fuel lines, and the proper LS fuel regulator. Our chassis will be a great foundation on which to rebuild that old Chevy.

1931 Model A Coupe on a new '32 Ford chassis we put together. This classic combination of putting a fenderless Model A on a stronger and better looking frame never goes out of style. The traditional theme is carried through with the Pete & Jakes front axle assembly and bobbed rear frame rails. As expected, the rear floor section needed to be cut out for the rear kick up, but we saved the rumble seat platform which the customer intends to re-install. Looks like it will clear the new rails just fine. Many people will channel the body a bit to close the small gap under the rocker, but our customer wanted to keep the "high" in "high boy" and so we fabricated a small filler panel that will make the gap disappear when it's painted. Can't wait to see this hot rod when it's finished!

Another '38 Chevy chassis completed! While all chassis are custom spec'd and built, this one had a few unique twists. To accommodate the high-horsepower blown motor, the rear frame rails were stepped in for the big tires needed to put the power to the pavement. Most unusual, however, is the Lenco racing 4-speed trans. These Lenco's are typically mounted only to the bellhousing and not to the chassis, but for this street driven car we made a custom mount to keep it secure over the roads. As this is a street rod and NOT a race car, we outfitted the front with a coil-over Heidts Superride II IFS, triangulated 4-bar in the rear, and sway bars front and rear. That Lenco will certainly turn some heads at the cruise-in!

A project update on a 1947 Chevy pickup chassis we built several years ago. John finished and then re-finished his truck and it is fantastic! Click the link below to read the full build story that John put together. Here's his message to us:

"Some while back you built a chassis for my 1947 Chevy pickup reproduction. You also provided valuable assistance in fixing some more recent brake issues. Back then, you asked for some pictures and I never got around to assembling a response.

Enclosed is a link to a photo summary of the project that shows the outcome and summarizes steps between.

Thank you for making this possible. It has been a long, 7 year journey and I am very happy with the results.

John"

John requested we build his chassis with the best stuff out there so we used a Kugel Komponents IFS with cast stainless steel control arms outfitted with RideTech ShockWaves. Out back we used a lowered leaf spring pack paired with another pair of ShockWaves. This allowed John to cruise at a nice, low, street rod stance but add some air to accomodate towing a small trailer. Everything was polished including the custom Currie 9" housing.

The custom work done to the body, especially the bed, is absolutely stunning. I strongly recommend you click the above link and see the details.

John - Thanks for sharing!

1931 Chevy Chassis with the full Kugel Komponents front and rear suspension package heading out the door. The customer pulled out all the stops on their re-do of a '31 Chevy that was originally his fathers car going back to the late 30s. The highlight is the Kugel independent rear suspension that will make this drive like a dream. Of course the IFS is also Kugel, enhanced with big Wilwood 13" brakes. Front and rear were powder coated by the Kugel factory which looks great and saves everyone down the line a bunch of time. We set the chassis up for a Chevy LS and 4L60E auto, plus added brake lines, trans cooler, and fuel tank. Our contributions didn't stop at the chassis as the customer also took home fiberglass fenders, running boards, grill shell, radiator splash apron, gas tank apron and a polished stainless grill. We're happy to do our part to get grandpa's Chevy back on the road and better than ever.

Attention Race Fans! We've had a few nostalgia race bodies and parts leave the shop recently. Pictured is our 1937 Ultra ProMod 1937 Chevy body made with a carbon fiber/fiberglass blend as well as a 1940 Willys in a more traditional fiberglass layup. The stack of noses shows two Ultra ProMod noses plus a stock-dimensioned 1937 Chevy car one-piece front-end destined for install on a gasser project. Fun stuff!

Keep in mind any of our fiberglass parts can be laid up with lighter fiberglass and/or carbon fiber. For info on our race bodies see our website here: http://www.superiorglassworks.com/Race-Car-Bodies-s/1847.htm
