WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PUT A WOOD HOG THROUGH A LANGUAGE TRANSLATOR?

It comes out as a chipper. But, it's not a chipper. It's a grinder!

What's the difference between a Wood Chipper and a Wood Grinder?
While both reduce wood waste, they're built for very different applications.
A wood chipper uses sharp knives to cut clean wood into uniform chips, making it ideal for branches, logs, and clean biomass material.
A wood grinder or Wood Bark Hog is built for the tough stuff — tearing, crushing, and shearing difficult materials like wet bark, green waste, cedar, cypress, redwood, pallets, and other stringy or fibrous products.
Instead of knives which are more expensive to maintain, a wood hog uses

INTRODUCING THE RAWLINGS TWINS: WOOD HOG AND BARK HOG

Oh, wait a minute, they aren't different, they are just different names for the same machine. The difference is what they are grinding. It's like your Grandmother calling you a different name from what your school friends call you.

So, one mill might call it a wood hog and another call it a bark hog. And, now, you are in the know!

WHAT HAPPENS TO RAILROAD TIES WHEN THEY DIE?

They come back to life as an alternative, industrial biofuel in biomass boilers to generate electricity and heat.

While railroad tie chips do not have the wide variety of uses that clean, ground wood does, they are an valuable source of fuel.

SO MANY HOG TERMS AND NOT A PIG TO BE SEEN

A recent post by SSS Industrial Inc reminded us that the biomass industry uses many "hog" terms.

1. Wood Hog: an industrial-strength machine designed to grind and reduce wood waste, such as bark, stumps, pallets, and logging slash, into uniform chips or mulch.

2. Hog Line: What about it SSS Industrial Inc, want to supply us with a definition?

3. Hog Fuel: a type of biomass fuel produced by grinding or chipping various wood materials, including bark, wood chips, and sawdust.

This year, Rawlings Manufacturing proudly celebrates 50 years in business—and we know we would not be here without our customers.

Since 1976, the Rawlings family has worked alongside sawmills and wood-processing operations to solve real-world challenges. At a time when many mills relied on hammer mills and struggled to process difficult materials like cedar, our customers pushed us to think differently. That collaboration led to the development of our solid steel Super Hi-Inertia™ rotor—designed to handle tough, stringy material reliably and efficiently, without the constant breakdowns operators had come to expect.

As a family-owned and operated company, we’ve spent five decades listening, improving, and building equipment that works as hard as the people running it. Today, Rawlings offers a complete line of horizontal and vertical grinders in a full range of sizes, shaped directly by customer feedback and field experience.

Our growth has been driven by long-standing partnerships, repeat customers, and the trust you place in us to keep your operations running. We don’t take that lightly.

From everyone at Rawlings Manufacturing, thank you for your business, your loyalty, and your confidence in us. We are proud to work alongside you—and we look forward to the next 50 years together.
