Pierce Engineers Inc

Pierce Engineers Inc Pierce Engineers, Inc. (PE) is a consulting structural engineering firm.

Pierce Engineers is a 60-person structural engineering firm based in the Midwest, working with clients across the nation. Our three offices in Milwaukee, Madison and Chicago work as one team with daily interaction and coordination on technical topics, projects, and management. The PE team has a traditional hierarchy of positions and roles, but we work horizontally fostering engagement from all lev

els of experience to create a successful team and develop our younger staff. Our practice is founded on building lasting relationships with clients and industry partners, who appreciate our teamwork and cost-focused approach to structural engineering. While our experience and expertise touch all types of building projects, we find that the best projects are the ones where the team works in a collaborative approach to deliver a successful project. Each project is unique – a custom solution for a particular set of conditions – but our approach is consistent: to deliver quality work in a responsive manner while incorporating the architectural vision, the owner’s budget, and coordinating with the contractor to ensure a smooth construction project. A few key points to our approach include:
- Understanding the importance of ongoing team communication both internal and external
- Developing early structural concepts to assist the team in finding the best solution from the start
- Maintaining a quality assurance and quality control program to deliver high quality work

Our 30 years of experience has shown that early involvement by our team as the project is taking shape can effectively drive decision making and efficiencies that lead to cost savings and a streamlined design process. This experience and ongoing communication between the design and construction teams provides a smooth construction process resulting in successful projects.

🌟 Friday Project Feature 🌟

Bryan Health Merrick Medical Center in Central City, Nebraska, is a 51,000 square-foot critical access hospital and rural health clinic that provides access to emergency, laboratory, imaging, inpatient pharmacy, surgical services, and physical rehabilitation services for the underserved community. The building is single-story, with some clerestory areas and double-height spaces. The primary structure was designed to support the loads and vibration/deflection requirements of medical equipment.

Innovation One is a two-story office building that utilizes perimeter precast wall panels for bearing and lateral load resistance. The first supported level is framed with precast planks, beams, and columns, which provide the required occupancy separation between the lower level parking and the office above.

The second story floor and roof are steel-framed. The project also features a 87,000 square-foot, two-story parking structure. There is parking on grade, and on the first supported level. The upper level supports a green roof over the entire footprint.

🌟 Friday Project Feature 🌟

Pierce Engineers is the masonry and structural engineer on the historic preservation project for Yerkes Observatory, originally constructed in 1897. Though not on the National Register of Historic Places, the observatory contains the world’s largest lens-type telescope, known as the Yerkes “Great Refractor”, used by Einstein and Hubble. It has been home to many astronomical discoveries.

PE completed a full structural and exterior envelope assessment in June of 2020. The exterior masonry consists of special Roman brick, ornate terra cotta, and gargoyles!

Each year, PE and the masonry contractor work together to develop the prioritized scope to meet the owner’s programming and available budget. As Yerkes finds new life and purpose through continued astronomical research and new programming opportunities, PE and the full preservation team strive to keep the Yerkes Observatory a beautiful, operational, and sustainable facility for the next century and beyond.

Lucas Marshall, PE, SE, and Ahraaz Qureishi, PE were on site recently to celebrate "Bottoming Out", reaching the lowest point of excavation, for UW Health's new addition at University Hospital.

The "Bottoming Out" celebration highlights the seemingly endless hours of effort that the entire design and construction team invested to plan for and execute the extremely complex excavation process successfully. The new addition's basement required excavations as deep as 48'-0" done close to operational hospital facilities and driveways. The excavation was carefully completed utilizing a tied-back soldier pile and lagging wall, with some elements of the adjacent building being underpinned with a combination of micro piles and a shotcrete and soil nail wall.

This seven-story addition will expand the emergency department, add 4 floors of patient rooms, and is expected to be completed in 2026.

PE is proud to be a partner with EUA, UW Health, JP Cullen, and the entire team on this complex project and we look forward to seeing it come to life!

Construction is well underway for the Frank Productions new venue, a one-of-a-kind music venue in the heart of Milwaukee’s Deer District, a 30-acre entertainment area surrounding Fiserv Forum, home of the Milwaukee Bucks!

The 4,500-seat venue is on the site of the recently demolished Bradley Center and is scheduled to open in late 2025.

We are excited to experience a show at this terrific new venue and to have the opportunity to work on another Deer District project!

Last week, our young professional's group, Pierce Engineers Emerging Professionals (PEEPs) gathered in Milwaukee to discuss potential career paths. Through a moderated panel of experienced managers, the PEEPs garnered a more nuanced view of the day-to-day job requirements and interactions between each role.

The highlighted takeaway for ALL roles was the importance of developing communication skills. Our panelists also encouraged each member to take agency in their career and find fulfillment in their choices.

The PEEPs ended the day with a fun boat outing on Lake Michigan!
