“Initial recommendations required us to go very deep with the piles. That significantly increased both material and installation costs. Ryan proposed a different approach - run a few probe piles with a revised helix configuration. And that's just what we did.. We increased the helix size, reduced pile length, and confirmed capacity at a shallower elevation.” - Phil Brackett, Deep Foundation Specialist

Construction continues in Bridgehampton, New York, a high-end new residential build located in one of the Hamptons' most desirable areas.

The original plans called for the helical piles to go 30 feet deep, which raised cost and schedule concerns for both the owner and GC.

After weighing options, timber piles were also considered. Being in a flood zone, helical piles were ultimately selected due to their vibration-free installation and reliable tension capacity in flood conditions.

Our Geotechnical Engineer Ryan confirmed that capacity could be achieved within a stiff soil layer at approximately 11-15 feet, reducing installation depth which saved time & money.

In comparison, timber piles would have displaced through the soil profile and require greater pe*******on - potentially up to 60 feet - resulting in higher costs.

The Brooklyn Bridge Marina, a premier New York City waterfront destination, is undergoing upgrades - including the reinforcement of its dock anchoring system.

After the property changed ownership, plans were made to replace the system.

Earth Anchoring’s Geotechnical Engineer, Ryan Zhang, P.E., used CHANCE HeliCAP 3.0 software to design the new helical anchoring system. Due to the site’s soft soil conditions, the anchors were evaluated for capacity and successfully met the required load-bearing criteria.

CHANCE SS175 helical anchors were installed without having to remove the original mooring system. They were connected using a SeaFlex mooring system arranged in an X-pattern, with opposing mooring lines extending from the helical anchors to dock.

The marina now has a mooring anchoring system that reflects its fantastic NYC location.

GroutForce now in HeliCAP 3.0 - a free helical pile design software available through Earth Anchoring.

Engineers can now design GroutForce displacement pile systems in HeliCAP 3.0 using the same calculations used by the Earth Anchoring & CHANCE engineering teams.

The GroutForce displacement pile is specifically designed to be the highest-performing displacement pile available for loose to dense sands and soft to firm clays.

Its patented design provides axial capacities exceeding 500 kips (2,224 kN), significant lateral capacity, and higher capacities with shorter embedment lengths due to its uniform, continuous-diameter grout column.

"Endangered piping plovers nest directly in the sand dunes at Ogunquit Beach, where their eggs are naturally camouflaged against the shoreline."

Earth Anchoring’s Keith Dolan pointed out that helical piles install with low impact, helping protect the sensitive dune habitat while supporting the boardwalk structure.

Now the public has direct access to the inlet side of the dunes without disturbing the piping plover nests.

“We weren’t convinced the piles needed to go that deep. Ryan suggested running a few probe piles with a larger helix configuration, which confirmed we could achieve capacity at a much shallower depth.” - Phil Brackett, Deep Foundation Specialist

The owner and GC were concerned about the cost of the original pile depths for the new construction build in Bridgehampton, New York.

Earth Anchoring’s Geotechnical Engineer, Ryan Zhang, evaluated an alternative approach by testing probe piles with a larger helix configuration to determine whether the required capacity could be achieved at a shallower depth.

The test confirmed a stiff bearing layer between 11 and 15 feet, allowing pile lengths to be reduced while still meeting design requirements - saving time & money.

“H-piles are not always the most efficient option for SOE and often cause too much vibration. For this project, switching to 8" helical piles made the most sense for speed of installation, no vibration and reducing the SOE construction schedule significantly." - Phil Brackett, Deep Foundation Specialist

Subsurface electrical utility work on 7th Street in Brooklyn, New York, initially called for H-piles as part of the SOE.

To reduce disruption on this busy street, the plan was re-evaluated to utilize 8" helical soldier piles, requiring minimal equipment and resulting in significant time and cost savings.

We supplied large diameter round shaft helical piles for installation at the SANDRESPC East Side Coast Resiliency Project as work continues under the Williamsburg Bridge in New York City.

The project includes installing new and larger sewer and drainage systems, as well as relocating or protecting utilities to help the area better manage stormwater and coastal flooding.

Savings, in time and money, are realized with Earth Anchoring’s value-engineered helical piles - recommended as a replacement for micropiles.

Stay tuned for more updates as construction will continue throughout the year.
